Guest Avro626 Posted 8 October , 2006 Share Posted 8 October , 2006 Hello I am researching my Grandfather's WWI service and all I know so far, from one small piece of paper, is that he was with 26th Brigade RFA between 1914 and 1918. Can anyone tell me more about this unit. I think he was a Gunner but that is about all I know so far. Thank you.

Your Grandfathers name name would be a good place to start. You can view MIC's (medal index cards) online at the National Archives (it will cost you £3.50 to download) these usually state rank etc. try this link, as this site is a mass of information http://www.1914-1918.net/1div.htm. or click on 'The Long, Long Trail' (top left) Good luck. Hoplophile Posted 9 October , 2006 Share Posted 9 October , 2006 The 26th Brigade, RFA spent much of the war as part of the 1st Division. In January of 1917, however, it became an 'army field artillery brigade', which was a unit that moved from one formation to another as circumstances dictated. You can find a history of the 1st Division at http://www.1914-1918.net/1div.htm
SteveA Posted 1 March , 2008 Share Posted 1 March , 2008 Hi Would the 26th Brigade remained in the 33rd Division as an Army Field Artillery Brigade? If not, which Division or regiments would it have been attached to? Regards. Steve
rflory Posted 2 March , 2008 Share Posted 2 March , 2008 26th Brigade, RFA served with the 1st Division until 14 January 1917 when it became 26th Army Brigade, RFA. At the time it was composed of A/26th Battery, 116th Battery and 117th Battery, RFA. From 6 March 1917 until the end of the war it served at various times with II, III, IV, VI, VII, IX, X, XXII Corps; the Canadian Corps, and the II ANZAC Corps. If you have a particular period of time that you are interested in, I can tell you the Division(s) with which it was serving. Regards. SteveA Posted 2 March , 2008 Share Posted 2 March , 2008 Dick Thank you for the info. I would like to have some idea if the divisions the 26th Bde RFA were with from 21st May 1917 to Nov 1918 - if that's not too much trouble. Keep up the great work. Regards. irwoodall Posted 27 August , 2011 Share Posted 27 August , 2011 Hi, Do you know where the XXVI Brigade was between January 1917 and May 1917? I am trying to put together as detailed a record as possible on the XXVI, as my Grandfather was in the 116th Battery from Sept 1915 until the end of the war. Thanks Ian
