Sourhill Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 Hallo All. I'm just beginning to piece together my family tree and the research I have done so far has led me to this site, which I consider to be one of the best, friendliest, most civilized places I've encountered on the internet. Ok I'll skip the rest because you'll start to think I'm just buttering you up, but you know what I mean. Archie Cameron was my great uncle. I wonder if anyone could help me with interpreting a line of Archie's from his WW1 binocular case, please? It is written in ink and I think it reads "B/84 RFA" but it could equally be "13/84 RFA". I'm pretty sure he would have signed up in the Musselburgh area, near Edinburgh. I have his MIC: A.N Cameron Driver 227633 RFA War Medal and the Victory Medal Medal Roll: 302B page 40577 (both medals) I don't know where his medals are now. (In case anyone is interested, the binoculars themselves are very basic (not prismatic) and have "Colmont Paris" on both collars near where the slide enters the barrel.) Thanks for your help. Leslie. Stebie9173 Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 It may mean "B" Battery, 84th Brigade. That Brigade was attached to 18th Division until January 1917. http://www.1914-1918.net/18div.htm Steve.
Armoured Farmer Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 I am open to correction here, but B/84 RFA means B Battery, 84th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Check here on the parent site: - http://www.1914-1918.net/rfa_units.htm and here: - http://www.1914-1918.net/cra.htm There are plenty more links from there which you should find useful. Farmer It looks like Stebie9173 beat me to it!
Sourhill Posted 6 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2006 Thanks AF and Steve. I don't know if anyone else has the same experience but here's mine: I actually followed the same pages (linked to in your posts) a couple of days ago but couldn't really believe then that something so easily accessible on my computer could really be what those boyish marks on an old leather case refer to. The importance of getting your replies is not just about the bald facts - it's also about the confidence you can instil. Thanks again. Great forum.
