Help!

I'm currently researching the military history of relatives from Ranish, Lochs, Isle of Lewis. I have had a great deal of luck so far on this site, especially links provided by Grandson Michael, but I'm stuck on one thing.

My grandfather's brother Angus Macleod (or McLeod) 9258, served in India with the 1st btn Seaforth Highlanders (I have his nw frontier medal 1908, rank pte) then with the 2nd btn Seaforths in F&F. The Scottish war memorial in Edinburgh lists his death as 25/04/15, as does the loyal Lewis Roll of Honour in Stornoway. In Stornoway they have him as cpl, no regiment, killed at Neuve Chappelle in France, but on 25/4/15 the Seaforths were fighting at St Julien in Belgium.

To make matters more confusing, the cwgc have no record of him and I can't find his name on any Seaforth's memorial. He is on the North Lochs memorial at Leurbost, but I would like to find out where he fell and if he is on a memorial somewhere in F&F. If I can't stand to pay my respects at the spot where he fell or was buried, it would be nice to at least be in the right country.

Any information at all, gratefully received. Thanks again to Grandson Michael for accessing my grandfathers records.

Barrie,

Incase you're still looking on my behalf, I just got a reply from Malcolm Macdonald of the Stornoway Historical Society, his name was misspelled. He is on the cwcg website, and Chedar Villa as McCleod A. As suspected, he was killed at St Julien. I'll go there now. Thanks guys.

Sorry Johny,

Should have specified, its from the Soldiers Died in the Great War CD, the only additional info it gives is that he was born in Lochs and enlisted in Stornoway, which you probably already knew. Glad you found him.

When did your brother join the 2nd Battalion, and do you know which company he was in? I may have him in a photo.

While researching a great uncle who served with the 2nd Seaforths, I downloaded and have transcribed the full War Diary.

I am attaching 'snippets' of my transcription for the dates 23 - 30 Apr 1915.

There is also an 8 page Appendix for the Month of April 1915 describing in more details "Further account of action on 25th April 1915".

If you want a copy of my full transcription for the month, PM me.

Kindest Regards,

Tom.
