ZimRich Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 Hi, does anyone have any information about 1st SA Mounted Brigade. I'm trying to research a C.R McCallagen, I have a copy of his service papers which are pretty confusing to try and interpret and it states at various times in the papers that he first attested in the 1st SA Mounted brigade (MG) but this then becomes the 1st Bereden brigade. My knowledge of the SA regimets is pretty sketchy are the two brigades the same unit but just referred to with different names? Any thoughts or info would be appreciated. Thanks Rich
tintin1689 Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 Bereden is Afrikaans language for mounted - the Union Defence Force was a bi-lingual organisation
Pat Holscher Posted 8 October , 2006 Share Posted 8 October , 2006 Not sure if its the same unit, but a couple of photos of the 1st S.A. Mounted Rifles appear here: http://www.firstworldwar.com/photos/troops3.htm
Borys Posted 8 October , 2006 Share Posted 8 October , 2006 Ahoj! Minor point - the "other language" at that time was Dutch. Afrikaans was adopted in paralell to Dutch in 1925, and replaced it in 1961. Borys
cahoehler Posted 9 October , 2006 Share Posted 9 October , 2006 Guys Yet another nit to pick. Afrikaans replaced Dutch in 1926 (tip check for Zs and hyphens). Carl Hoehler
