8/L.I.R.

After having served on the Western Front from April to September 1916 (Champagne, Somme, Diksmude) the 3rd Guard Division was sent again to Galicia until November 1916

Hi Cnock. Are they the 'Berlin Cockchafers'? Defenders of Mametz Wood in July 1916? And given a rough time in July 1917 by the Welsh Division? Or am I way off beam?

Nice photos - are they copyright? If the unit did fight at Mametz and Pilckem can I copy them for my forthcoming website? Do you have any of them in France?

Plenty of questions there!

Hello Bernard,

The 'cockchafer' were the Garde Füsiler Rgt, see post 10

This was another unit of 3rd Guard Division

The Lehr Infantry Rgt was indeed lying in the south part of Mametz Wood in wait for the Welshmen on 10/7/1916. In fact it was 2 Bn of Lehr Infantry Rgt, and 8th company showed in this thread was part of 2nd Bn.

3rd Guard Division was also at Pilckem on 31/7/1917;

It also fought at Bourlon Wood in November 1917 and near Cambrai March 1918.

Cnock

Thanks Cnock. The Welsh accounts that I have read regarding the Lehr Regiment indicate that they were a tough bunch. One Welsh soldier describes them as 'warriors' and the Welsh Division paid a heavy price in ejecting them and their comrades from Mametz Wood. The 10 July 1916 was remembered in Swansea as 'Mametz Memorial Day' until the Second World War.

Would you mind if I featured some of the photos on my website in the near future please? If yes, who should I acknowledge?
