PBI

Saw this when it came out in the 60s, found it a very powerful, thought-provoking film. A classic of its type I believe. It was a stage play transferred to film.

See some reviews on the IMDB website here.

Excellent film - very atmospheric, with a fine cast. If you can get a copy, compare it with 'Paths of Glory'. FKAC is very detailed and focused, takes place over a shorter timescale, while POG is more 'Hollywood', broader sweep of action, but equally powerful.

Hi PBI

Do not know Breaker Morant but in answer to All Quiet it as to be Lew Ayres version for me. Also agree King & Country is a very good film but a little depressing.

From memory, Breaker Morant has Edward Woodward (Wicker Man, Callan etc..) in the title role. I saw it ages ago, and it's a well made film, but rather treads in the footsteps of 'Fair Dinkum Aussie bloke misunderstood and mistreated by English stuffed-shirt generals..' This was a very popular theme in the 70s, but I seem to remember that several people at the time thought that the Morant in the film was rather romanticised.

I liked Breaker Morant very much. I saw it in the theater when it was first released in the States, where it was very popular.

Then again I'm not a POM, and yes, expect to be bashed :)

I think The original version of "All's Quiet," is the best. I saw the original release of the later version on televsion when it premiered back in the early 80's. The original release was almost an hour longer, and a much better film than that released later.

I saw For King and Country many years ago and was particularly struck by the tragedy of Tom Courtenay's character and that of Dirk Bogarde's too, all of which culminates in the last disturbing scenes where the two are brought together.

  • 8 years later...

It's on Channel 4, 0225-0400, Saturday November 22.

(Confusingly, the Sunday Times "Culture" section lists this under Friday, whereas it's early on Saturday morning.)
