Kookaburra Posted 3 October , 2006 Share Posted 3 October , 2006 I've just looked at my grand uncle's information at CWGC, first time in probably 2 months could be longer and found that they have tried to correct his parents names and where they lived. There are a couple of spelling errors one is his father's name and the other is the place where they lived. This is quite understandable given that his father was Italian and the place where they lived is a Maori name. Cheers, Diane

Kookaburra Posted 4 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 4 October , 2006 Diane What are the details you want corrected? Hi Terry http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=1738261 Serjeant CHARLES SCIASCIA MM 10/518, 1st Bn., Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F. who died age 25 on 01 August 1917 Son of Mr Nicolas and Mrs Riria Sciascia, of Koputeroa, Foxton. Terry Denham Posted 4 October , 2006 Share Posted 4 October , 2006 Diane I guessed it was this one. I supplied a photo of his inscription recently.
Kookaburra Posted 5 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 5 October , 2006 Diane I guessed it was this one. I supplied a photo of his inscription recently. You sure did along with all the rest of our local men and they made a wonderful display at our open day back in September. I saw a few tears that day from relatives of those men when they saw the inscriptions. Cheers, Diane
Terry Denham Posted 5 October , 2006 Share Posted 5 October , 2006 Diane Do you have any documentary evidence of the name. These records were only reconfirmed with the NZ authorities last month and they cross checked the BMD records to come up with what now appears. If you have anything that says 'Nicola', it may help. Thanks Terry, I have emailed a cousing in Italy hoping she has an Official Birth cetificate for him. Here is a site with Koputaroa to confirm the spelling of the place name. http://fallingrain.com/world/NZ/0/Koputaroa.html

alliekiwi Posted 6 October , 2006 Share Posted 6 October , 2006 Erm, and I hate to say it... but the place name is still spelt wrong. Koputaroa not Koptuaroa (wouldn't a nice change of name to... Smallville.. be better?) *hides* Allie

Koputaroa not Koptuaroa (wouldn't a nice change of name to... Smallville.. be better?) *hides* Allie Flaxville would have been more appropriate. Kopu meaning full and taroa is a variety of flax. Foxton was renown for its flax. Cheers, Diane
