Guest olahwhite Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 My great uncle died in the Great war. I was interested to find out which battle and where it was held. All I know from the CWWG site is that he died on 28th March 1918 and is buried in Arras cemetery. I tried to track down where his battalion was stationed but am having problems finding the movements of the 56th battalion - the Commonwealth war Graves Commission stated that this was his regiment. How can I find out where this battalion was from and where did it play its part in the WW1 Battelfields?

steve fuller Posted 2 October , 2006 Share Posted 2 October , 2006 Well, heres his Medal Indx Card for a start off. Originally in the Yorkshires by the looks of it. If you get it and post it on here, there are specialists on both the MGC & Yorks regt that will be able to do all sorts for you. Soldiers Died in the Great War says he enlisted from Middlesborough if it helps? From his Medal Card, there are Medal Rolls to get, search for his service record at Kew and have a look at the War Diary for the action he fell in. Someone on forum may even have the diary if yu ask around ... Good luck to you
