greetings pals,on looking up the famous football manager bill shanklys website i found a photo of his father,john, in service dress around the time of the war.any service records to be had of the man ???? would be interesting to see what he got up to.i have included the photo,hope it works

Seven years later, i'm wondering the same thing. I see there are pension papers for a John Shankly on Ancestry but don't have access. If it's the right man, there may be a mention of Bill who was known as Willie in those days. He was born in 1913.

Refused pension May 1919

7 children listed including William 2/9/13

Yes, It's definitely him (also papers for Bill's brother / cousin (?), 7134 Pte Alexander Leo Shankly 5th RSF)

Many thanks, Simon. Interesting that he had a heart problem. All five of his sons were professional footballers. At least three, (Bill, Bob and John) died from heart attacks.
