Hi everyone, im new to this site and would like to know if anyone can help me please at all!

My Gt Grandad was a gordon highlander, his name is William John Askew, im trying to find his birth aswell but that is proving very difficult right now.

On his marriage certificate in 1914 he used the name William John Waterman Askew but i dont know if that name would be on his army cards as theres no army numbers etc... on the marriage certificate but im told now you dont have to put that on the certificate.

Im trying to find medal cards but not getting nowhere at all.

Can anyone advise me what to do, ive looked at archives and other places aswell.

Thankyou

Joanne

Joanne,

Here are the 45 Medal Index Cards for the name W. Askew:

Could not find any Gordon Highlanders, will post later if I find any more information. Are you sure he was in a British Highland Regiment, as there is a chance he served in the Canadian Army?

Hope this helps

Can't find a GORDON with the name Askew on the CWGC site.

None listed in "Soldiers Died" (pt65 Gordons)

so I assume he survived the war, do you have any other details at all?

MIC cards seem best bet. - at least there are some names.

Joanne,

It may be possible that he served with the Gordons, but not overseas and thus did not qualify for the service medals. He would not appear on the medal index cards in that case.

Does anyone in the family have any medals? If he has the British War medal then his name and number and regiment would be on the rim.

How sure are you that he served with the Gordons?

Hi

I had the same problem with photos at first, your photo needs to be under a 100kb open up your pic then edit it manually by resizing

I usually put in 450 by 400 wide this should shrink it below the 100kb allowed

Hope this makes sense if not there is a help section at the top of the page click on Images

Cheers Sandra
