Jon6640 Posted 28 September , 2006 Share Posted 28 September , 2006 Below is a picture of Private 22974 Robert Mitchell, 5th/6th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) The son of James Mitchell and living at 7 Chapel Square, Robert’s military career commenced on enlistment with the Royal Scots on 28th May 1915, just before his 17th birthday. Private Robert Henry Mitchell was critically wounded in the neck and foot on the 12th August 1918 and died of his wounds at 7am on 13th August 1918. He was originally buried in the hospital cemetery, Dury, south of Amiens. As this cemetery was located in the grounds of a shell shocked and mentally insane hospital it was considered that a more fitting resting place should be attributed to these soldiers, mainly to provide adequate access for grieving relatives to visit loved ones safely. Roberts remains were exhumed and now lie at rest in Villiers-Bretonneux military cemetery in perpetuity. The reburial took place shortly before December 1927. Arrangements were made for an inscription to be made on his mothers and fathers tomb stone located in Cheslyn Hay cemetery, this reads Pte Robert Mitchel, Royal Scots, Died of Wounds Aug 13th 1918, Rest in Peace. Also his name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the Royal Scots headquarters in Scotland. The question I want to ask is what is the badge or mark on his right arm likely to be?
