There was a hospital near Stockton Brook, Staffordshire which has been knocked down. Above one of the beds was a plaque which has been saved. The information on the plaque is posted below can anyone give me any more information as to the plaque or the names on it other than what's available on the CWGC site and SDGW disc. Many thanks in advance although I am not expecting many replies.

The plaque says

This Cot was Endowed by the

Residents of Stockton Brook, the

result of Hospital Efforts for the year 1920,

As a Memorial to the Men of the District

who gave their lives in the

Great War 1914 – 1918

Kevin,

SILVESTER gets a mention in the war diary on the day of his death. It may be something, it may be nothing, I'll scan and post it in the next couple of days.

Roy

PS, In the diary it is spelt Sylvester.

Ask and ye shall be given! :)

HALL, Tom, b. April/May 1895, enlisted Coonamble, NSW, 371, Private, killed in action Friday, 27/08/15, age 20, 17th (New South Wales) Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Son of Thomas and Margaret Anne Hall, of Stockton Brook, Staffs., England. Native of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Sandbach School 1908-1909. Commemorated Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey, panel 58. Tom Hall is also commemorated on the Brown Edge War Memorial, the Stockton Brook Hospital plaque and the Sandbach School Great War Plaque. He is also commemorated on the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Panel 82.

17th battalion arrived at Anzac, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, on 19/08/15. It was prematurely committed to the battle at Hill 60 between 27 and 29 August, suffering many casualties. Hill 60 was the last major action of the Gallipoli campaign, and is not well known. 17th Battalion’s courageous efforts were overshadowed by the exploits of the 18th Battalion, who took a section of the Hill 60 trenches, and of the 10th Australian Light Horse, whose Lt Jim Throssell was awarded the VC for taking and holding the summit trenches. Tom Hall was posted as missing 27/08/15.

A Board of Inquiry was convened by Major Martin, CO of 17th battalion, on 02/06/16, to inquire on men missing from the battalion. The only witness, Pte A H Hamilton, stated that “when we were ordered to charge Pte. Hall was with me. We got over the parapet together. When we had advanced 15 yds as instructed, we took cover to wait for the rest to come over. Pte. Hall was then with me. On being ordered to charge, I charged forward and saw no more of Pte. Hall. I am of the opinion that Pte. Hall was killed and did not reach the enemy trenches”. His opinion was deemed insufficient evidence for a finding.

At a later Court on Inquiry (09/04/17), Sergeant Major Robertson of the 17th Battalion stated that “in the charge at Hill 60, Hall was killed. Informant was the Sergt Major and knew Hall. Hall was not to be found after charge and was killed by machine gun fire”.

Hi Kevin,

Just out of interest where abouts was the hospital?

Liam

It was in a ward at St. Edwards in Cheddleton, years ago it was moved to the nurses museum part of the hospital, and when the hospital was pulled down for old folks houses the plaque was given to Councillor Christina Jebb for safe keeping until a place was found to rehouse it. It looks as if it is going to be in Stockton Brook parish hall. Public meeting will be held in the parish hall on the 2nd December. time to be confirmed. i will keep all those who are interested in future developments.

The plaque is on display in a school at present. I am trying to get an open evening so that it can be seen along with other items. I will keep those interested in the plaque posted as to when this may be.

Kevin.
