John_Hartley Posted 6 November , 2003 Share Posted 6 November , 2003 Has anyone heard of Meanee Day? It seems to be 17 February which is when my researchee was KIA whilst serving with 10th Cheshires. The only Google reference I can find also relates to a Cheshire Regiment celebration in 2003. I presume it must be local to Cheshire but I've never heard of it. Guest Pete Wood Posted 6 November , 2003 Share Posted 6 November , 2003 Second Afghan War 1843. Meeanee (note spelling) is also known as Miani. Famous action involving the 22nd Foot (Cheshires). Take a look at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/ewh.bryan/Cheshire-13.htm Sir Charles Napier's dispatch is famous for being the first one to recognise the valour of NCOs and Privates by name
John_Hartley Posted 6 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2003 Racing many thanks. I'd been trying to open that page all day to email the guy to ask. It just wouldnt have it. Sod's law, eh. Description of the battle seems very similar to the trench raid 17/02/17 John
christine liava'a Posted 7 November , 2003 Share Posted 7 November , 2003 In NZ there is a place Meeanee, a suburb of Napier. "Napier took its name from Sir Charles Napier, the hero of the battle of Meeanee in the Indian province of Scinde. " I always wondered where the name came from. Spillers Posted 9 November , 2014 Share Posted 9 November , 2014 Hi John, I know this thread is old, but I've just come across a reference from Peter Threfall of the WFA (Merseyside Branch) to Meanee Day and linking the Cheshire Regiment trench raid on 17/02/1917 in which my Great Uncle was killed to this battle on 17th Feb 1843 in India (now Pakistan), which is well established within the Cheshire Regiment remembrance traditions. I'm not sure that military planning in 1917 extended to celebrating previous battles, but intriguing nontheless. http://www.military-art.com/mall/battles.php?BattleID=41 Regards, Guy.
