Donny Anderson Posted 7 September , 2006 Share Posted 7 September , 2006 Hi all, I have received a photo of two Gordon Highlanders in hospital uniform from fellow forum members carolm and 4thGordons. There is a possibility that one of the men may be my grandfather. From his service record I know that the first time he was wounded and returned to the UK he was in 2nd Western General Hospital in Manchester (have just read the fasinating thread about this hospital). He was wounded and returned to the UK a second time but I don't know where he was hospitalised that time. There may be a clue on the on the back of the photo, printed there is the following-"The City Series, Bert Phillips, Photographer, Wells." What hospitals if any were in this area? Thanks in advance Donny
4thGordons Posted 7 September , 2006 Share Posted 7 September , 2006 Hello Donny - sent some better scans to your email. I did some searching and there was apparently a hospital at Combe Park (? which it appears may have been specially constructed for WWI casualties) I am sure someone will know. I think probably "in the Wells area" might be safer as several other threads have indicated photographers appear to have travelled a little. Here is a scan of the picture Donny refers to and the photographers stamp.
Terry_Reeves Posted 9 September , 2006 Share Posted 9 September , 2006 This is a link to Combe Park Hospital, but it appears to have been built in the 1930's. If anything, its predecessor, the Royal United, might be a better bet. http://www.medicalheritage.co.uk/Bath/RUH.htm There was also the Cedars Red Cross Hospital in Wells which might fit the bill.
