Just watched a very interesting doc on the Battle of the Somme. Well worth watching, next Sunday they do Arnhem, if its anything like the Somme one, it`ll be well worth a hour!!!

On very interesting fact in this documentary was that 73% of all the soldiers who were involved in 1/7/16 got away without a scratch.

Yes that was an interesting fact, but I suppose that the battle wasn`t raging every day, it you get what I mean. Most of the casualties would have occured during `Going over the top`, with what was it I think 4 a day killed threw normal trench wastage (I hate that term).

I also watched the Arnhem one, it wasn`t as good but interesting none the less.

The 73% must refer to all units and not infantry ie. those away from the actual fighting.

No definite figure for the number that went over the top is known but I think in round numbers it is regarded to be 120,000 of which 60,000 were killed, wounded or missing. Would be happy to be corrected if my estimate is way-out.

Interesting but I think it back up the theory as 20,000 where killed on the first day weren`t they?

I`m sure 73% is everyone....I wonder how many were killed during say Dunkirk or the like?
