Has anyone seen or read Trench Art: Materialities and Memories of War, by Nicholas Saunders, which is featured in November’s History Today?

It looks interesting. What did you think of it? Should I buy it?

Thank you for reactivating this question, Andy.

As it happened, I had a birthday book token to use, so I bought it in November, but (v. ashamed here) I've only looked at the pictures so far. You've reminded me to locate the book and actually read it.

I am, perhaps, somewhat biased, but this is an excellent book. After his first book he clearly received a good deal of correspondence, from people with poignant trench art items made by grandfathers etc with all the stories of how and when they were made. This adds a real 'social history' that is the essence of trench art, there is nothing more personal than something a soldier spent months crafting, amidst the filth and anguish of a prison camp or a trench...

Read it, Gwyn, you won't regret it !!
