Dragon Posted 30 October , 2003 Share Posted 30 October , 2003 Has anyone seen or read Trench Art: Materialities and Memories of War, by Nicholas Saunders, which is featured in November’s History Today? It looks interesting. What did you think of it? Should I buy it? Gwyn
andigger Posted 24 July , 2004 Share Posted 24 July , 2004 Thought I'd bring this back up in case any one has reviewed the book since Gwyn posted. Andy
Dragon Posted 24 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 24 July , 2004 Thank you for reactivating this question, Andy. As it happened, I had a birthday book token to use, so I bought it in November, but (v. ashamed here) I've only looked at the pictures so far. You've reminded me to locate the book and actually read it. Gwyn
redbarchetta Posted 24 July , 2004 Share Posted 24 July , 2004 I am, perhaps, somewhat biased, but this is an excellent book. After his first book he clearly received a good deal of correspondence, from people with poignant trench art items made by grandfathers etc with all the stories of how and when they were made. This adds a real 'social history' that is the essence of trench art, there is nothing more personal than something a soldier spent months crafting, amidst the filth and anguish of a prison camp or a trench... Read it, Gwyn, you won't regret it !!
