I have men I am researching in

Royal Navy

Royal Naval Vounteer Reserve

Royal Navy Reserve

What is difference?

I also have men in Merchant Navy, take it this was an exempt occupation?

John,

Royal Navy; Regular forces

Royal Naval Vounteer Reserve; Civilians joining as volunteers

Royal Navy Reserve; Profesional seaman.

Thats as simple as I can make it, names and numbers would help to determine service.

"Exempt" from what? The Tower Hill Memorial suggests that they put themselves in line to be "Exempt from Life" and once their ship was lost their pay was stopped if they survived.

Tonym - yes I should have been more explicit. I meant if person was in Merchant Navy they were not liable for conscription. In no way was I belittling there contribution in WW1 or WW2.
