Graeme Heavey Posted 22 August , 2006 Share Posted 22 August , 2006 On my bike this morning on my way into work, I was travelling along Chancery Lane and I rembered seeing on a website about London a reference to the Royal Fusiliers memorial. I was almost past it when I spotted it and just manged to stop in time. On it, it states that 43,000 men of the Royal Fusiliers were killed. To be honest, I was gobsmacked. It seems a huge amount of men for one regiment to lose. I'm still gobsmacked. Was the total exactly that - 43,000? I know the Royal Fusiliers was one of the biggest regiments pre-1914 but blimey.........
John_Hartley Posted 22 August , 2006 Share Posted 22 August , 2006 Graeme I've never been quite sure of the distinctions, but I wonder if the memorial combines the RF and the London Regiment. SDGW gives 15528 for the RF and 27632 for the Londons. John
Graeme Heavey Posted 22 August , 2006 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2006 It says Royal Fusiliers ( City Of London Regiment ). I know some of the London Regiment battalions were affiliated to the RF but the regt had 40-odd battalions all in. Its a little mystery isnt it? Hywyn Posted 22 August , 2006 Share Posted 22 August , 2006 Terry did the CWGC Regimental stats in a recent thread here http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...c=55115&hl= Royal Fusiliers show 17377 London Regiment is split into Artists, Post Office etc but gives London Regiment(Royal Fusiliers) as 5705 I saw on another thread recently that someone here had access to the Times online. Maybe a report on the unveiling will throw light on the mystery? Hywyn

ianw Posted 22 August , 2006 Share Posted 22 August , 2006 43,000 is probably the wounded figure if 22,000 fell as the article suggests.
