:D This is a ww1 forum so naturally they are ww1. Never used though and when higher command got a whif of what money got wasted in the northern Vosges they stopped all work. There are many concrete artillery positions in the Vosges for example the sentier de Bunkers at Burnhaupt le Bas:

http://burnhaupt.free.fr/bunkers/index.html These were used (and some show that).

Then there are the caverns on most Italian mountains like Mt Grappa (Italy): http://www.xs4all.nl/~aur/Battlefields/italytravel3.htm

Problem with the usual artillery positions is that they were just pits in the ground which have either been filled on or have corroded over the years leaving shallow holes that are hard to photograph because depth perspective is lost. From memory I would say that the best examples are the German ones on Vimy ridge. If you walk up to the memorial and walk past it there is a steep bank and at the bottom there are German gunpits of the 'Hangstellung'. See http://www.xs4all.nl/~aur/Battlefields/durand.htm

Marco
