Richard Hobby Posted 21 July , 2022 Share Posted 21 July , 2022 Thank you for this. Very helpful. The data I have suggests these hospitals, however the subject of my search was posted to the units but the personal timeline does not coincide. Is there any data for personnel after embarkation? RAMC, CAMC, QAIMNS nursing sister. Kew records (only?)show medal cards. Richard
TEW Posted 21 July , 2022 Share Posted 21 July , 2022 I see the 6th Canadian GH did not arrive till July 1916. Being posted to it in May 1916 makes life difficult! Sure it's the Canadian 6GH not the British 6GH? Where does the info come from and who is it, RAMC or CAMC? The hospitals were run by the Base Area, whichever that was for the Hospital in question. The RAMC base diaries sometimes indicate postings to hospitals from new drafts but there's no hard and fast rule. The base diaries vary in content and detail and change during the war. Some are very good, others have nothing. TEW
Richard Hobby Posted 22 July , 2022 Share Posted 22 July , 2022 May 16 was embarkation. Records indicate was at "6th General" Rouen late 1917, early 1918. 2nd stationary at Abbeville Sept - Nov 1918. Appointments were to RAMC, CAMC, and QAIMNS during recruitment and service. A lead to personnel service records may solve many questions.
TEW Posted 22 July , 2022 Share Posted 22 July , 2022 These are the British 6 GH & 2 SH then? I've looked through the Base diaries for Rouen and Abbeville and neither mention posting of any drafts. I also checked the Commandant diary for both with no luck. Best bet really is to download (for free after registering) the diaries for 6GH & 2SH. Fingers crossed they mention the arrival of new men & women. 6th General July-Dec 1917 2 Stationary Just as an example I've attached a snippet from the Boulogne Base diary for May 1916 WO95/4012/6. I think these are arrivals from England unless otherwise stated. There are a few entries for Boulogne arrivals to be posted to other bases rather than units in that area. Is this the sort of thing you'd like to find for 6 GH & 2 SH? Do you have a port of disembarkation in May 1916? TEW
TEW Posted 23 July , 2022 Share Posted 23 July , 2022 Apologies, I said: Quote I also checked the Commandant diary for both with no luck Just to clarify, the Commandant Diary for Rouen has some RAMC arrivals for May 1916. By late 1917 they are recording less information. There's no mention of any medical units arriving for Oct, Nov & Dec 1917. A snippet from WO4043/3 for 10th May 1916. Courtesy of TNA. 41 Divisional FAs & Workshop arrived 5/5/16. TEW
Richard Hobby Posted 23 July , 2022 Share Posted 23 July , 2022 My subject research has a passenger list from St John in May/June 16 on Matagama. Thereafter only know 6th General and 2nd Stationary and a convalecent hospital in England. It is now unclear whether British or Canadian units. More complex research required.
