steve fuller Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 Hi Pals Am looking into a family whos parents lost 3 of their four sons & would welcome any extra info so that I can include their story on my website as it seems to me they shoudl be honoured. They are: Private 203933 William Pack Born in Wollaston and lived in and enlisted from Wellingborough. Eldest brother, of 48 Hill Street in Wellingborough who left a widow. Before the war, William was employed at Messrs Gilbert & Sons, a shoe manufacturer in Wellingborough. Enlisted into the Cambridgeshire regiment as Private 331122 early in 1917 but was transferred as a sniper to the 6th Battalion, the Bedfordshire Regiment, arriving in France in May that year. KIA 9-10-1917, Third Ypres Private 9313 Arthur James Pack Of the 2nd Battalion, the Northamptonshire Regiment Born in Wollaston, Northamptonshire and enlisted into the army in Northampton. Died of wounds 21st January 1915. Buried in grave I.G.7 of the Estaires Communal Cemetery in France. Lance Corporal 9541 Frank Pack Of F Company of the 1st Battalion, the Northamptonshire Regiment Born in All Saints, Wellingborough and enlisted into the army from Northampton. Killed in action 21st May 1915, aged 21. No known grave but is remembered on panels 29 to 30 of Le Touret Memorial Lance Corporal 3/10018 Harry Pack Of the Northamptonshire regiment was wounded in August 1916 but survived and was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery as Private 196488. Any info such as Btn War Diary entries etc would be very welcomed. Thanks very much all Steve
MelPack Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 Hello Steve I can't really help you but I would like to congratulate you on your good taste in the choice of research. These are probably my grandfather's cousins or second cousins. There was an interconnected tribe of Packs in Kettering, Irthlingborough, Northampton, Wellingborough and Rushden. A couple of other casualties that I know of were Fred Pack D.O.W 1917 (Irthlingborough) and a Rushden Pack who served with the CEF. Good luck with your research Reagrds Mel
Stebie9173 Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 Don't have the War Diaries for the 1st & 2nd Northants yet. (Plumped for the 7th on my last visit to the NA). I'll add the battalion history extracts to your (ever growing) list. I'll see if any of the Pack clan are mentioned on my database of wounded, etc. There is apparently a website where you can look at the Bedfordshire war Diaries, but I can't remember where I saw it. There is a Wollaston Roll of Honour book produced by a local historian. It's on my list of things to find, as one of the officers/ex-OR of the 6th Northants is mentioned. Steve. Looks like Im in the middle of the Pack's turf, living in Rushden as I do! I have an article on the family from the Kettering Leader, c/w photos - if youre interested drop me a mail as I cant attach anything from the forum so will have to send it direct. Steve - Ive seen the site in question but its a load of poop so wouldnt bother with it myself ! If the Wollaston book is in the church mate, give me a shout & Ill see if I can get access before I move as Im only 10 mins up the road from it at the mo. Stebie9173 Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 I believe the guy who wrote the Wollaston book tried to get it sold in the church but the vicar wanted none of it. There is a website, but I can't seem to Google it. Steve.
Stebie9173 Posted 8 August , 2006 Share Posted 8 August , 2006 From my casualty list extracted from the Times: 9541 L/Cpl F Pack, 1st Northants reported wounded in Times of 12-6-1915. This would probably be too early for his date of death, and is in line with being wounded at Aubers Ridge on 9-5-1915. 15235 Pte W Pack, 1st Northants also reported wounded in that issue. Not sure where he fits? 10018 Pte H Pack reported wounded in Times of 18-8-1916. No battalion given, but could be the 6th, as lots of other known 6th Battalion men on same list. If he was wounded in August as per the Article then probably not with the 6th, however. 15313 Pte E Pack in "C" Company 7th Battalion on eve of departure to France 27-8-1915. Steve.
