Remembered Today:

An Alternative to eBay?

I recently came across the below online auction site whilst browsing another forum and thought members might be interested.

I don't know anything much about the site and I'm not a member, but it seems interesting as the 'about us' blurb states that there are moderators for each category of items for sale, and that one of their top priorities is to ensure that they don't run scam auctions and not allow fake items to be offered for sale. How exactly they police this, I don't know.

There is also a forum element where members ask advice regarding items they have and ask for valuations from other members.

It appears to be a British site and they do have a small but interesting WW1 section.

Anyone have any knowledge of the site or able to give better advice regarding its bona-fides etc?

This is described as "detonator tip from a large exploded bomb"

Looks like a German shell fuse to me! I'm by no means an expert, but I feel that their moderator should have picked this up <_<

Odds are though, I have just made a complete a**e of myself.

Some of the other items, hip flasks for example, have no description other than "nice condition". Nothing about provenance or why they are thought to be WW1. Seem to be a bit slack for a moderated auction.

caveat emptor......an Armored Corps badge listed as a "World War One tank drivers" badge?

Either the moderator (Expert?) was asleep or the seller had a really big pair of cajonies or an empty head.

Almost as large as the "collectors' market" dealer who tried tried to sell a friend of mine a set of "First World War Paratrooper Wings" !?!

Maybe he (the "paratrooper") was in reality a balloon-atic!

Some dealers are rather dense when it comes to history.

I bought a postcard of soldiers at Tidworth on an exercise, obviously based on the recent South African war. Some of the soldiers were proudly guarding some smirking "captives", whom the dealer thought really were Boers - brought all the way back to Britain.
