shancrom Posted 3 May , 2007 Share Posted 3 May , 2007 TIPPERARY (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD L/CPL WILLIAM JOHNSTONE 11TH Battalion RIR would be much appreciated, i am carrying out research on a memorial plaque in Kilmegan Parish Church located just outside Newcastle Co Down, any ideas how someone from Katesbridge Co Down would have ended up in Tipperary Churchyard? museumtom Posted 4 May , 2007 Author Share Posted 4 May , 2007 I have no idea why he is here but Tipperary Town was a Garrison town. If you look in the Research section of the Arts and resource centre in Thurles they have all the Tipperary Stars and Nationalist newspapers going back to the 1880s on microfiche. Perhaps he might be in there. Soldiers Died says he died at home. Regards. Tom.

One of the Bde HQs was in Tipperary. So there may be some connection there

He is on the Carmarthenshire War Memorial, which I am researching. All the best, Steve John.
museumtom Posted 19 June , 2007 Author Share Posted 19 June , 2007 Hello Steve. You will have to ask Paddy Blackguard as Thomas Shaw is buried in Waterford not Tipperary. Paddy photographed the Waterford headstones. Regards. Tom.

(I'm an Australian Light Horse researcher but Quinane is a descendant of mine. He shot himself in the foot and his service records state he died of pneumonia in hosital in Dublin, though whether it was precipitated by the wound is another matter). many thanks, matt

museumtom Posted 9 August , 2007 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2007 This was a very sad grave as it sits in a hard to find graveyard outside Borrisoleigh up the mountains. You would pass it if you blinked. Strange to see a ww1 war grave is the middle of nowhere. I am sure the local paper would have something on him if you looked. Regards. His service record states that prior to re-entering the front, he discharged a round from his rifle into his foot. He subsequently was hospitalised and spent time in Ireland tracking down relatives. It appears that while there he passed away and his records show that a cousin requested that he be privately buried among other (distant) family. I appreciate the photo very much. cheers matt
