Robert William Posted 1 May , 2007 Share Posted 1 May , 2007 Hello Cathy, Have you seen the photo of Bruce that I put on this Forum stream - post number 42? As you will see I photographed it in the frame. To get you a good one for reprinting I will remove it from the frame and scan the photo: Will do it in the next few days. It is a classic photo. I was in Bingara a few years ago when the Shire Council had Light Horse murals painted and they sought RSL assistance for detail and on my request the Lanagans were able to come up with Bangate Station Horse Brands which the artist put on the painting of the horses. This mural is on the Telstra building corner of Maitland and Finch streets. Regards, Rob Remembering 789 Trooper L.C. “Dusty” Launt 1st ALH - K.I.A. Jack Wyatt Posted 25 January , 2019 Share Posted 25 January , 2019 (edited) This is probably one of the most detailed accounts of the Chessboard attack by 1LH on 7 August 1915 including casualties. A useless waste of life the result of a poor decision by Godley and Birdwood as the pre-conditions for the Light Horse attacks at the Chessboard, Quinns and the Nek had not been met. Had Hooky Walker been consulted, the decision may have been different. Interesting to note in the 1LH (and no doubt the 2nd and 3rd), the men wore slouch hats and service dress caps unlike the 3rd Light Horse Brigade which wore predominantly pith helmets. In an account by a soldier in I believe the 20th Battalion of the 2nd Aust Div at the Nek, he reports the recovery of the body of Col White (CO 8LH) and noted this unhappy group all wore pith helmets and shorts. This account is taken from Anne Flood's book = In the Footsteps of the First: 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment: The August Offensive Gallipoli 1915 https://www.chauvelfoundation.com/august-offensive-1915 Edited 25 January , 2019 by Jack Wyatt
Guest Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 Mate, The attack by the 1st LHR was not because of either Godley or Birdwood, but commander 1 LH Bde, Harry Chauvel . The attack by the 1 LH Bde was given as an option, while the attack was hoped help the attack by the 3 LH Bde, which was only to attack once the NZ Bde had captured Chunak Bare and was driving down towards the Nek. The failure of the NZ Bde to gain its objectives, ment the attack could have been cancelled, but the Aussie officers on the spot sent the men over the top, to cover the NZ Bde pushing up Chunak Bare. Why do we always still blame the British for our own mistakes, we were just as capable of killing our own men, as much as the British did. Guest Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 Mate, For some time I have been trying to confirm the men of this charge, but records are hard to find and not all that good. This is what I found so far, there maybe the odd mistake but its close to what was on the ground. You will see that there was more then 200 men either in the charge or men sent over during the battle, to either reinforce the bomb fight or to recover the many wounded. The great thing here was the recorvery of so many wounded from such a poor area to move around. 1st Light Horse Regt at the Charge at Deadmans Ridge 7-8-15 RHQ KIA 2 WIA 7 of whom 1 DoWs GLASGOW Thomas William Maj 2 LHR att CO REID James Moffat Maj A/CO to OC A Sqn KIAHOLMAN Richard Dudley Capt Adjt WIA face, leg & arm bomb FITZPATRICK Albert Leslie 2/Lt/QM (not in charge) MERRINGTON Ernest Northcroft Rev Capt Chaplain (not in charge) WELLS John Clarence Dr Capt RMO (not in charge) JAMES William Hopkin 81 RSM (not in charge)* McKEOWN William Henry 82 RQMS (not in charge) NELSON William Maurice 27 Sig/Sgt (not in charge) POOLE Alfred Thomas 151 Sgt/Cook * WIA leg DoW 20-8-15 reported in charge YOUNG Frederick Richard Charles 8 Sgt/Bugler KIA ELLIOTT Leslie Shaw 5 Sgt/Tpt (not in charge)* BARNES Bruce Tasman 36 Pte AAMC (not in charge)* BOURKE Charles 523 Pte (not in charge)* CABBAN Albert Arthur Sydney 242 Sig (not in charge)* CHAPMAN Henry George 775 Pte WIA thigh COBCROFT Edward William 538 Sig (not in charge)* CRICHTON Stanley Robert 12 Sig WIA arm ELLIS John Lewis Spencer 19 Dvr (not in charge) GABRIEL Gordon Escort 308A Cpl AAMC (not in charge)* GARNER William 11 batman (not in charge)* IRELAND Percy Alexander 734A Pte WIA back & concussion KIMBALL Leslie Austin 21 Dvr RHQ (not in charge) KITCHEN Stanley Nicholas 614 Pte WIA leg LEASK James Urquhart 40 Sig (not in charge)* LIGHT Roy 791 Sig (not in charge)* McRAE Finlay O'Neill 1775 Pte AMC medic 1 LHFA (not in charge) *DCM for recovering four wounded men from in front of Popes Post 8-8-15 during which Sgt Threlfall 1 LHFA was killed McGILLAN Michael 29 Batman to Capt Homan WIA arm MORRIS Edward William 26 Dvr (not in charge) PARKER Alfred 23 Dvr (not in charge) PETERS Willie 645 Sig (not in charge)* POILE William Thomas 150 Cook (not in charge) ROBINSON William George 429 Pte (not in charge)* RYE Frederick Herbert 310A Pte AAMC (not in charge)* SMITH Herbert William James 630 Sig (not in charge)* THOMAS Evan Benjamin 622 Pte (not in charge)* TOMLINSON John Joseph 746 Pte (not in charge)* TRAILL James Hamilton 457 Sig (not in charge)* ZEISSER Peter 168 Pte KIA MG Sect KIA 1 WIA 2 (not in charge)* BROADBENT John Raymond Lt KNIGHT William James 4 SSM AHEARN William John 59 Pte BARRACLUFF William Bert 60 Pte BARNES Donald 362 Pte BURGESS Theodore Frederick 58 Cpl CALDER Thomas 61 PteDEAN Arthur Stewart 296 Pte KIA (Red Cross Card) DUFF Robert William 63 Dvr DUNN George Iley 405 Pte ELLIS Alfred 406 Pte GIBBS James William 610 Pte GREATOREX James Joseph 560 Pte HAYDON Clifford Charles 75 Dvr HARTNETT Walter Robert 559 Pte JOWETT John 787 Pte JONES Rhys Travers 52 Pte JONES Roy Victor 57 Pte KEYES Arthur Joseph 64 Dvr McDONALD Frank Joseph 65 Pte McDONALD Percy John 66 Pte MacKAY Alexander Sidney 621 Pte McKINNON Alexander 537 Pte WIA L/leg bomb or bullet MULDOON John James 70 Pte ROBINSON John Selwyn 48 Pte ROE Joseph Alexander 798 Pte WIA L/thigh shot RUTHERFORD Arthur 648 Pte SHAW Parkes 54 Dvr WALLACE William 806 Pte A Sqn HQ KIA 31 WIA 42 of whom 6 DoWsREID James Moffat Maj KIA (Red Cross Card)WHITE Arthur Andrew Lt 2ic WIA R/arm shot * RYRIE Oswald Bruce Hon/Capt A Sqn C Troop (not shown in charge) * LAWRY Walter Spencer Capt T/OC A Sqn (not shown in charge) GIBSON Charles William 195 SSM KIA * GARBETT Alan Montague 203 SQMS (not in charge) COOPER Gordon Colin 475 Pte C Sqn att A Sqn as stretcher bearer CLIMO Reginald John 231 Bugler WIA foot WINTERTON Alfred Thomas 226 Pte/Sig (Possibly SHQ) KNODLER Reginald John 135 Pte (possibly SHQ) A Troop A SqnTINSON Garnet Edmund Iles 2/Lt Sqn bombing officer WIA both legs bomb DoW 9-8-15 (Red Cross Card) KERR Harold Younger 83 Sgt reported MIA KIA (Red Cross Card) JONES William Clifford 129 Sgt Troop Sgt BRADY Herbert George 94 Pte (possibly) CALDOW William Andrew 97 L/Cpl CONWAY Kenrick 635 LCpl CRICHTON William Donald 102 Pte KIA DURHAM Archibald Stewart 107 L/Cpl WIA R/arm & back shell ELLERTON John Luscombe 109 Pte (possibly A Troop) FARRELL George Michael 111 Sig WIA sprain back & knee FENWICK Robert Henry 174 PteFERRIS Cecil 941 Pte GATES Cecil John 115 Pte WIA face R/hand & both legs GLEESON John William 116 PteHOLZ Peter Jacob 177 Dvr HUDSON Walter John 120 Dvr HUSSEY Martin 121 Cpl WIA L/thigh INGLIS William 123 Pte WIA 7-8-15 R/thigh bomb ISTED William 125 Pte WIA L/leg DoW 16-8-15 KERR Archibald 722 Pte WIA buttock R/leg & arm bomb (possibly A Troop) MARTIN John Thomas 882 Pte MAXFIELD Edwin Ernest Manston 140 L/CplMAXWELL Albert 1331 Pte McLEAN Alexander Archibald 143 Pte WIA R/arm shot (possibly A Troop) MENZIES Harold Christopher 144 Pte O'CONNOR Desmond Maurice Max 209 Pte PINKERTON William Harold 149 Pte KIA * reported killed helping bring in Lt White SHELDON Cecil Job 504 Cpl reported MIA KIA (Red Cross Card) WARDEN Charles Moore 212 Pte WIA L/buttock & leg bomb (possibly A Troop) * YULE Edmund 567 Pte C Sqn (red cross cards show with Lt Tinson A Sqn A Troop?) Guest Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 Mate, Here's something I wrote on this battle some years ago, but never finished; The 1st Light Horse Regiment at Deadmans Ridge The A Sqn Attack As the minute hand moved to 0430, Major Reid with A Sqn, saw the last shells fall on the Deadmans Ridge, before switching to there next targets. At 0430, Reid blow on his whistle sending the first two Troops over the top into the half light. Both B Troop under Lt MacMillan and C Troop under Lt Weir, moved rapidly down Popes hill across the Waterfall gully into the old trenches of the 13th Bn AIF, and into the first line of Turkish trenches, some 50 yards away. A Heavy fire was reported opened onto them as soon as they left Popes post, with rifle fire from Deadman’s and MG fire from the Chess board. But due to the half light of the gully made accurately very difficult. The first man to fall was believed to be Stan Villis from B Troop, who fell after taking 10 steps, picking his way through the barbed wire breaches, he was seen by Trooper Gardiner, who saw him fall, while its unknown if his brother Frank, who was next to him, saw it as Frank was killed soon after. Much of the fire was coming from their left, and B Troop was exposed , but thanks to the light still not in the gully this saved many men. While men like Sgt Robinson the Troop Sgt B Troop, was shot in the left arm, as was Lt MacMillan. The distance to Dead man's was covered quickly, as men jumped into the old trenches on the forward slop of the ridge, now being used as a listening post by the Turks. Those hit had to be left, as the attack had to go fast before all the Turkish guns would turn on them, but the two Troops still were forced to their right into the outer works shown as C 27 on Turkish maps. There the Troop officers ordered the men to load their rifles and began to engage the Turks in the first trench line. While doing so the section bombers primed their bombs. These were now thrown into the first Turkish trench high on the sky line of the ridge. The exploison of which disorganized the Turks allowing Major Reid to order a charge into the first trench. Both B & C Troops made the small distance quickly and jumped into the trench where the surprised Turks fought hand to hand while others bolted to the rear. The bayonet was used to clear to trench while the bombing section again prepared their bombs for the next trench line. While B & C Trooops were fighting in the first trench line, Capt White moved the next wave into there positions with A & D Troops made ready to go. At around 0432 Capt White sent the next wave over the top into the darkness. The sun was now raising and it lite up the slops of Baby 700 and the Chessboard, but the gully in between Deadmans and Popes Hill was still in shadow. But that did not save many men as the machine guns cut down A Troop, now under command of Sgt Kerr, as the bombers under the Bombing officer Lt Tinson, were with B & C Troops." As you may notice A Sqn formed up in two waves, the first was B Troop (Left Flank) and C Troop (Right Flank) the second wave was A Troop (LF) and D Troop (RF). Each Troop had around 20 to 25 men depending on there losses and Sqn HQ. The Sqn had to supply 100 men for the attack, but many men from C Sqn were attached to fill gaps, as A Sqn didn't have that many due to heavy losses from sickness. Senior officers were a problem as Maj Reid was the highest officer still with the Regt, and Maj Glasgow was attach to be the Commanding officer, but still took command of B Sqn during the attack. The problem with this account is still where was the bombing sections, accounts can't clear that up, the A Troop officer was the bombing officer and was he leading them or the bombing sections, did they advance with their Troops or as a whole unit, so far we don't know? This is so far without looking at B Sqn, which even less is known of there advance, did two Troops climb Waterfall gully into the first Ottoman Trenches or the more likely a one Troop frontage. More needs to be said here but I have to go now. Sorry S.B

S.B Birdwood and Godley insisted the attacks go ahead to assist the New Zealand attack on Chunuk Bair. This decision was confirmed by Birdwood's HQ to Col Antill immediately prior to the first wave of 8LH attacking at the Nek. This was despite the pre-conditions not being met that they themselves had put in place. I agree Hughes and Antill are culpable for failing to halt the attack after the first wave of the 8LH had been decimated. Had a competent commander like Chauvel or Glasgow been in charge no doubt the attack would have been halted. Chauvel was under the same orders as Hughes. The 1LH charged at the same time as the 8LH and had some success. He could not have stopped that attack once launched. At Quinn's, he rightly is credited with confirming the decision by Maj Bourne to prevent a second wave of 2LH being destroyed. That is good leadership. Kiwi books on Gallipoli make it clear Godley was poorly regarded both as a tactician and a fighting soldier. He was an administrator and the LH disasters were a repeat of the 2 May disaster (ordered by Birdwood and Godley) which just about destroyed the Otago Bn and 16th AIF and resulted in 13th AIF losing 200 men. Jack Wyatt Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 1 hour ago, stevebecker said: Mate, Here's something I wrote on this battle some years ago, but never finished; The 1st Light Horse Regiment at Deadmans Ridge The A Sqn Attack As the minute hand moved to 0430, Major Reid with A Sqn, saw the last shells fall on the Deadmans Ridge, before switching to there next targets. Sorry S.B Thanks for the information and great detail. Flood's book advises that Lt Harris' party climbed Waterfall Way/Gully and had to attack as the Turks had discovered them and a shower of bombs had been thrown. As the attack was then known to the Turks, Maj Reid's force charged from Popes. Harris' party (with Glasgow) took two lines of the Turks' trenches. Harris advised he had 12 bombers and 12 bayonet men in his party. Do you have a copy of Lt Harris' account of the attack in Reveille 1932?
Waddell Posted 28 January , 2019 Share Posted 28 January , 2019 (edited) This may be of interest to those following this thread. Several years ago a work colleague gave me a small photo album they had found in a house many years ago. The album contained photographs of AIF soldiers in Egypt, England and France. They hadn't been able to identify the owner of the album, although his first name, Walter, was written in the front of it. There were several old documents and loose photos with it and I managed to identify the album's original owner as 3499 Driver Walter Tinson. Among the loose photographs was the one attached of two young men taken in Newcastle. The man seated on the right is Walter and the man on the left I believe to be Walter's brother, later Lieutenant Garnet Edmund Iles Tinson, who died of wounds received in the action mentioned in this thread. There is an image attached of Garnet taken from the newspaper on Bryn's Lost leaders of Anzac site to compare with. Lest We Forget. Scott Edited 28 January , 2019 by Waddell Added more. Jack Wyatt Posted 28 January , 2019 Share Posted 28 January , 2019 A search on Maj Reid turned up this very interesting link including the information that his cousin was OH Woodward. You may recall it was OH Woodward's diary which inspired the movie Beneath Hill 60. Woodward was in the protected mining industry but enlisted in response to Maj Reid's death. https://www.tenterfield.nsw.gov.au/sites/tenterfield/files/public/images/documents/tenterfield/ANZAC Centenary/Mem and Honour Boards/James Moffat Reid memorabilia v3.pdf

Jack Wyatt Posted 28 January , 2019 Share Posted 28 January , 2019 In The Footsteps Of The First - Dr Anne Flood (a copy is available on ebay for $47) Another excellent book on Gallipoli which provides a very different view is Echoes of Gallipoli - Terry Kinloch (available on ebay). This book concerns the NZ Mounted Rifles on Gallipoli. I found this book to be informative and interesting. The August attack detail is intriguing as is the view of Lt Col Meldrum (Co of Wellington Mounted Rifles) on the Nek attack. Meldrum's unit together with the Otagos fought on Chunuk Bair as well as Table Top, losing 100 men from 173 starters.

Jack Wyatt Posted 1 February , 2019 Share Posted 1 February , 2019 On 26/07/2006 at 19:30, Aaron Nelson said: Hi all, Have recently discovered that my wifes Great Grandfathers brother was in the 1st Aust. Light Horse regiment and was killed on the 7th of August 1915. The charge of the Lighthorse on that day has gone down as one of THE defining moments in Australia's history. His details are Henry Frederick Kolts, Regt no. 333, 1st Australian Light Horse (NSW) Regiment, 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade. His unit at 4.30am on the 7th August 1915, left thier trenches at Popes Hill and charged towards the Turkish ' cheesboard trenches'. Apparently 200 men charged and 154 were casualties. The problem is I cant find a good description of the charge that the 1st Light Horse regiment made that day. All the descriptions I have found are about the 8th and the 10th Light Horse on the Nek. Does anyone have a detailed description of the 1st Light Horse charge, 7th August 1915, from Popes hill. They apparently captured 3 of the four trenches and after 2 hours had to withdraw from them. Any descriptions of this action would be most appreciated. Best regards Aaron. I know the post was some years ago but in the book In The Footsteps Of The First by Anne Flood, Kolts is one of a number Light Horseman identified when B Squadron was photographed riding through College Street, Sydney. Kolts was the batman to Lt Nettleton (who is also identified) and both died on 7 August at the Chessboard.

Guest Posted 2 February , 2019 Share Posted 2 February , 2019 (edited) Mate, Even this should be taken with salt, was no he didn't command C Troop B Sqn but C Troop A Sqn. He took over possibly C Troop BSqn later on Anzac when Harris took over C Sqn as T/OC, but the names mentioned else where Broome, Mychel and Smithers and Frost (BSqn SSM) being the last to leave Anzac are mostly B Sqn, other then Smithers was a Sig in C Sqn. A Sqn was shot up so badly that it only supported B Sqn when they pushed up the right flank of the Ottoman trenches on Deadmans. There is a map called Anzac Trench Diagram dated 20 July 1915, which name (number) the ottoman trenches. Deadmans is one of those that are hard to confirm as many of the old 4 Bde Trenches were still there in Waterfall gully and were used as listening posts by the Turks. The Top of Deadmans was called C 28 and ran into C 22 as it went up towards Baby 700. C 28 had two main trenches running down to waterfall gully called C 27 (between C 28 and C 22) and the last C 29 over looking the gully between Popes and Quinns. C 29 is where B Sqn took all those trenches and its a complex of at lest three trenches along water fall gully before C 28 on the top. they are the trench's captured by B Sqn, as we never made it to the C 28 trench on top of Deadmans. Likewise the C 27 area had at lest two large trenches and two small trenches before moving to the top of C 22 and C 28. So if he captured four trenches then these must be the ones he mentions? The trenches in the Areas C 27 and C 29 ran together so the men could move from either area. Its still unsure how much of the C 27 area was captured by A Sqn, possibly the closest to the C 29 area The Halis account has an Ottoman map in which the Trenches are numbered and named different then what we did, but the fighting can be followed. As to the Halis account it is in the artical of the flask of Lt Nettleton, but I didn't copy the book it came from? Its called "A Dusty Flask looking for Burdett Philip Nettleton" It has an account of the flask, also his note book with nominal roll of his Troop, and the account of Halis. There is no name on who did it but possibly the AWM? Sorry S.B Edited 2 February , 2019 by stevebecker

Sorry S.B In The Footsteps Of the First records (Page 98) - Lieuts Weir and Campbell and 23 men reported from Egypt on 6 August 1915. Maj Glasgow was moved from 2LH to become CO 1LH to replaced Maj Vernon who had been ordered away on sick leave 31 July 1915. Page 99 - Operations Order for attack provides that B Squadron under Captain Wallace Cox would move via Quinn's Gully Post to Waterfall on the right and to be in position on 0430. Upon seeing B Squadron in position, A Squadron under Maj Reid would move via a shorter path on the left and take and hold a frontage Camel Hump to Trench C26-27. Page 103 - Harris records that Maj Glasgow, Lt Nettleton and Lt Weir with 16 men came up to join us and help to consolidate our position. The Glasgow party came via B Squadron route. emrezmen Posted 2 February , 2019 Share Posted 2 February , 2019 (edited) I would like to share my translation of full detailed battle report written by CO of 27th Regt. Lt-Col. Mehmet Sefik for those who might be interested in Turkish point of view. Translation might be problematic at some points because even the original text is complicated (long, inverted sentences etc.) and difficult to understand. I've tried my best. Location: Bombasirti (i.e. Turkish Quinn's)To: 19th Division Command Report on the details of battle of 25 July 1331 (7 August 1915) The enemy fire, which had been continuing since the last night by various types of guns, become violent early in the morning and especially the heavy howitzer fire devastated our trenches considerably. At 4:30 am, it was impossible to see the terrain in front of our trenches owing to dense dust and smoke caused by the explosion of heavy howitzer shells desultorily fired into a gully between trenches No.7 and 20-21. Just then, a strong [enemy] force, whose size was unpredictable due to smoke, attacked the trenches No.20-21 and Sergeant Ali Trench (a line in front of trench No.20) from the trench No.7. The enemy also attacked our trenches numbered 24 and 25 from the S trench. The enemy infantry was also attacking on the 18th Regiment front. Although the fire was opened at once, the enemy took advantage of the aforementioned smoke and the dead area in the gully, approached our trenches and first attacked with a fierce bombing, then some of them jumped into the Sergeant Ali Trench. Those who jumped into the trench were annihilated by bayonet, and those in front of the trench were annihilated by rifle fire and bombs, and remaining fled towards the gully. The enemy approached towards the trench No.21 without being seen, took advantage of the broken ground there, and hurled a terrific shower of bombs into the Corporal Ahmed Trench which was in front of No.21 and connected to it. There, some of our soldiers were killed and some were wounded. One of the two squad leaders was killed (brave sergeant Izzet) and Sub-Lieutenant Hakki Efendi was wounded. Feeling that the resistance in this trench had been broken due to dead and the wounded, the enemy, including two officers one of whom was probably a captain, jumped into the trench, but the remaining was killed and partially wounded by rifle rifle and bombs from other parts of the trench, while some forced to hide in the gully. Those who entered the trenches, although they called their friends behind, failed to bring them to their side. They used traverses to protect themselves and began to hurling bombs all around. The secret support trench (bombing trench) behind this trench, which was previously built as a precautionary measure, was secretly manned at once by a party of Lieutenant Mucip Efendi’s squad from 3rd Battalion 4th Company. Upon a counter-bombing from there, only around ten or fifteen [enemy] soldiers were able to escape wounded from trench No.21. About 20 others, including aforementioned captain and the other officer, were killed in the trenches. But the enemy who took refuge in the gully, protected from the fire of our infantry, severely rained down bombs for quite a while into both Sergeant Ali Trench and the trench No.21 and these were responded with bombs. Although the enemy intended to attack the trenches again from the gully where he had taken refuge, a large portion were wounded again by rifle fire and the bombing, and a part of them either killed or fled. Especially, an officer who was seen to insist on urging them with a stick in his hand was particularly aimed at and killed, thus this attack, too, was defeated. After throwing bombs for a while from the gully to Sergeant Ali Trench and the trench No.21, the enemy did not retreat directly into E(?)/7 trench and went into Korku Dere (Monash Valley); thus, completely fled. If they were retreated into the S Trench, they would be completely annihilated since the smoke that blocking the view was already gone. Still, they suffered casualties during the retreat by the fire opened from trenches numbered 22, 23, and 24. A single daring soldier, who had attacked from S Trench, threw a bomb into the trench No.25 and then jumped in, but immediately killed. Others, being exposed to machine gun and infantry fire, were shot dead on the side of their trench as soon as they came out. Some of those who managed to get out of the trenches, without being able to enter them again, threw themselves into the gully in front of the trench No.24 in order to protect themselves from the fire turned on them. However, they, too, inflicted casualties by bombs thrown from that trench. Enemy's medical personnel was seen carrying many wounded in the gully. In this battle, after our force in the Sergeant Ali Trench and trench No.21 defeated the enemy who came upon them, they opened an effective enfilading fire on the enemy attacking the 18th Regiment from both Yükseksirt (Russell’s Top) and other directions. The trench No.22 fired at those who fled towards the Korku Dere. The trench No.23 first opened an enfilade fire on the attackers coming from Y Trench and then on those who were attacking from Yükseksirt. The battle took place in a very violent manner, especially in trenches No.20 and 21, and Sergeant Ali Trench. A company from our reserve battalion reinforced the 18th Regiment on our right, and trenches No.15 and 16 also participated in the battle. Following the defeat of the enemy with the help of God and with heavy casualties inflicted, an effective two-hour preparation bombardment by heavy howitzers, concentrated especially on the trenches numbered 20, 21, 22 and 23, on our support lines and our encampment, caused heavy casualties. First Battalion’s loss was 12 dead, 42 wounded, and Second Battalion’s loss was 5 dead, 26 wounded. Devoted and energetic Halil Efendi from Machine Gun Company, who was newly promoted to captain, was severely wounded. In this battle, the loss of 3rd Battalion, which was occupying the Sergeant Ali Trench and the trenches numbered 20, 21, 22, 23, was 51 dead, 166 wounded. The total casualties of our regiment in yesterday's battle were 68 dead, 235 wounded. The enemy has probably lost three or four times that, or maybe even more. Guest Posted 2 February , 2019 Share Posted 2 February , 2019 (edited) Emre, Mate well done you have cleared up a number of points I was unsure of. As to the account, yes the artical mentions that Halis's report was used by Selik to write his account, both are also the same. Thank you for finding two named Ottoman trenches I couldn't confirm, The Ottoman map has these all together and I thought both Ali Cvs and Hamdi Onb Siperi were were the Troops moved up to the front from behind Deadmens, but your placement looks better and makes the account better to understand. Its known he had one company holding the front from Sgt Ali trenches (1xplatoon) and Ahmend Onbasi (1xPlatoon) and C 22 between Deadmans and Quinns (1xplatoon) with 1xplatoon in support possibly around the Top of Deadmans. There would have been a company in support behind Deadmans and another company in reserve between Deadmans and Gun Ridge. Possibly the last company at rest or on work parties? From the casualties I show, trying to confirm what company held Deadmans is hard to see, but the account by Sefik and Halis mentions Lt Mucip Efendi 3Bn 4Co (12Co). So was the 12Co holding the line?
