tcm878 Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 Hi all, I am trying to research a soldier who was the Grandfather of a friend. I have very little information other than his name was John Hughes and he was from Liverpool. I have attached a photograph to see if anyone can recognise the Regiment etc. I have noted that his buttons are black and I will try to enlarge the cap badge. His background is very sparse but ant the time of enlisting he would have been a clerk and he survived the war and returned to being a librarian. I will try to find out other information from other sources but in the meantime if anyone can help? Neil

tcm878 Posted 18 July , 2006 Author Share Posted 18 July , 2006 Having studied the cap badge I think the regiment may be the Kings Royal Rifles (KRRC) and John Hughes may mave been in the Church Lads Neil

Patricia Posted 19 July , 2006 Share Posted 19 July , 2006 Do you know what part of Liverpool he was from? I have seen the name "John Hughes" on a plaque in St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Beaufort Street (Toxteth Park area). Patricia.
Andrew Hesketh Posted 19 July , 2006 Share Posted 19 July , 2006 9 possibles in the KRRC: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...mp;mediaarray=* Probably 8, because I don't think he'd be the CSM listed. None of them appear on CWGC.
tcm878 Posted 3 August , 2006 Author Share Posted 3 August , 2006 Thanks for the replies I am struggling for any further information on this subject. I have asked my friend to try and find out a little more detail. She has a great story from her Mother saying that John survived in a trench full of water by wedging his SMLE across the edge and hanging from it to stop himself drowning. She is convinced he was a "Church Lad" and this may have been why he joined the KRRC. I will look through the medal roles ands update if I get anything else.
