Guest wintershaft Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 Hello from new member. I have a specific interest in the French army and have recently acquired a medal with badge attached. I am OK with the medal but wonder if anyone has any idea about the badge i.e. from which regiment? I guess the horse is a help. Hope the pic comes out OK. Thanks in advance
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 The Medal is the Croix de Combattants{Combattants Cross instituted in the 1930s & awarded retrospectively to WW1 Combattants. The Brooch is I believe St Jean d'Arc{St.Joan of Arc}& probably pertains to Rhiems/Orleans & looks to be more Religious than Military
squirrel Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 The cross of Lorraine and the fluer de lys (a symbol with connections to the Virgin Mary for reasons I know not) on the badge tend to back up the religious angle.

Thanks very much for your help...I can see the reasoning. I know the medal to be very common but never seen this badge at all. Thanks again

The Fleur de Lys represents I believe the "Trinity",however it was also carried on the Standard of Jean d'Arc

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 May I suggest that 'Brittish Batles and Meddals' is upgraded? Ian, It appears we are both right,as Me, BB & M & the Catholic Church recognise the St.Jean spelling in unison with the St.Jeanne' Jean/Jeanne ??? IanA Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 And what, exactly, is the Catholic Church supposed to know about saints? Ian P.S. It should be Ste. Jeanne!!!

IanA Posted 18 July , 2006 Share Posted 18 July , 2006 Wintershaft, I really am very sorry for this. Your thread appears to have been high-jacked! Despite all I say, if you have medal queries, just address them to HarryBettsMCDCM. (Just avoid asking him about French saints!!). Cheers, Ian

Cheers, Ian As a new member I am just happy that it gave you somrthing to think about! I will try to keep religion out of any of my future postings though. I am goning to be brave and assume that the recipient of the medal was a religious soldier who came from Rouen - possibly. Thanks for your interest.....Brian
