brownag Posted 14 July , 2006 Share Posted 14 July , 2006 I’ve got a list of war memorials for Scottish sports clubs. I reckon there’s got to be more than this out there. Does anyone know of any others? I’ve got these from the UKNIWM site and newspapers, and the Tait memorial hole was mentioned on this forum before. Derek Robertson Posted 14 July , 2006 Share Posted 14 July , 2006 Football - Hawick, Hawick F.C., Great War, Hawick Museum, UKNIWM No. 44285 Interesting that this memorial is listed although it is wrongly attributed as a "football" memorial whereas it is actually a Rugby Union Memorial. The memorial consists of a hand written list of the members of Hawick Rugby Club who served during the Great War. I was fortunate enough to have a small part in its rescue from obscurity about 7 years ago. For some reason it had been removed from the Hawick Clubrooms and put into storage under the main stand many many moons ago. It was only in conversation with one of the oldest club supporters that he remembered a Roll of Honour hanging in the clubrooms and we instigated a search. The Roll of Honour was subsequently found, cleaned up and donated to the local museum. But how it came to be "lost" in the first place to possibly one of the proudest rugby clubs in the country remains a mystery to me. There must be a great number of Rolls of Honour lost over the years.
brownag Posted 14 July , 2006 Author Share Posted 14 July , 2006 Derek Thanks for pointing out the Football / rugby mistake. I've come across a few errors in the UKNIWM database which must be down to someone in London making a mistake in transcribing someones handwriting and not knowing the local spelling. When I get a chance I'm going to have a good look through the 'Scotsman' archive for 1920-1924. They had a section for unveiling of war memorials, that's where I got the Jedburgh one. It will be interesting to see how many have survived. I'm sure there is a plaque in one of the Edinburgh swimming pools to members of a swimming club, I think it might be the Warrander one. I'll have to try and check it out. Given the number of sports clubs up and down the country I'm sure there must be (or must have been) more memorials. Thanks again Adam
Derek Robertson Posted 15 July , 2006 Share Posted 15 July , 2006 Adam, Yes, there have to be many more sports club Rolls not mentioned in the list but I don't know of any. The 2 Hawick ones that I'm familiar with are mentioned. The Memorial at Murrayfield still stands but it doesn't list any names which is a pity.
