ANY BRISTOL EXPERTS

Evening Pals,

Could any Bristol experts tell me what were the mainstream newspapers

around during the war, do they have archive access and were there

any absent voters lists and where to find them ?

Regards,

Simon.

Simon,

There were 2 papers - I believe it was called the Bristol Standard, but I may be wrong (and now called the Evening Post) and the Clifton Chronicle (which is still going).

As for an AVL for Bristol - no chance. I've been looking high & low for ages and I've never come across one.

With regards to archive access, the only way to get anything pre-1990-ish is via the Central Library in Vristol - it's all on microfiche.

The 'Western Daily Press' was also around at the time, as was the 'Bristol Times & Mirror'. As Les says, the main Library in Bristol (next to the Cathedral) has all the necessary archives, but it does get busy at times, so it may be worth booking a microfilm reader machine in advance (for which you'll have to pay), if you are travelling a long distance.

Gentlemen,

Thanks.

That answers another one of many questions. Unfortunately living just outside London I do not get as much time as I should visiting family in Gloucester and Bristol. But I will take your advice and book in advance at the library next time I am up your way.

Simon.

P.S. Which one of the above papers released the most stories from the war, gallantry awards, missing in action letters and obituaries.

etc etc

As Nick mentioned, it was the Bristol Times & Mirror that I was thinking of... not the Standard. (where on earth did I get that?!?!)

To answer the obits, MIAs etc, these papers were the main stay of the day. I was researching Dan Burges VC at the library a while ago and the range they have is quite good. The staff are helpful too (if a little "frumpy" at times).
