Remembered Today:

Today's surprise

I was visiting my local library this afternoon and they had a Somme display in the reference section. Some photo's and information and books on a little stand. So I thinks- "I'll have a look at this, should be worth a read". It was featuring members of the Border Regiment killed on the Somme, pictures of their graves or memorials and other info.

Lo and behold I find my Great Grandfather (see my signature) and a picture of his wifes grave (she died in 1940) on it is an inscription to him giving his name, rank, battalion and date and age of death. Now I did not know this stone was in existence, so I spoke to the man who was responsible for the display and found out where it was.

Went up and got myself a picture.....brilliant...it just goes to show -you never know what you are going to find and when. As I say I was unaware of this gravestone. Gratitiude to the library system and the man in question (in return I tipped him off about some of the photo's on my webpages and he seemed quite pleased as he hadn't seen some of them before).

I shall post a picture when I get on my home pc......

........ a really chuffed Spike B)

You just never never know what you will find when curiousity comes to the fore.

Must be a satisfying feeling, Spike.

Thanks everybody, it goes to show I should never think I've got all there is with regards to my GGF.

Next all I need is that damned elusive picture of him.

"Heartened, he returned to the fray".

Still smiling :D

Never give up hope as I only a few months ago found pictures of my Grandad from his WW1 days.

They turned up from a cousin who only lives a few miles away !

Good luck mate

Well Spike!

Never give up that photo ... from personal experience I know this to be true :)

We only had one photo of my grandfather ... in his civilian band uniform.

A couple of years ago I managed to trace some of my grandmother's family in Cornwall and all the Aussie cousin's were ecstatic. We were madly swapping photographs and in amongst them was one of a digger ... it turned out to be my grandfather!!!! He was on leave in the UK and had obviously gone down to Cornwall to visit the in - law family :)

Bright Blessings

Sandra
