Terry Denham Posted 11 July , 2006 Share Posted 11 July , 2006 CWGC headstones (if that is to what you are referring. They are not MoD) are manufactured from many different types of stone although the white Portland, Botticino and Hopton Wood predominate. However, granite stones are common in certain areas - Scotland, Canada, New Zealand etc - and slate is also common in places such as Wales. You will also see red sandstones and green limestone used. I have recorded over forty different types of stone used (including several varieties of granite). The materials used are not due to a date of maufacture. Stones are selected for their geological properties and availability. Local stones are sometimes used.
