Remembered Today:

death after the war

I am researching Driver Thomas Machin, 265971, 104Bty, 22 Bde, Royal Field Artillery, died 10/5/1921 who is buried in Hanley Cemetery, Stoke-on-Trent.

I am fairly sure this is my great uncle but don't seem to be able to get any further information (a little hard from Australia!). I don't know when he enlisted but had been told he was injured during the war.

Can anyone help me with any further information on this person?

He is listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, here is the link.

Some learned pals will surely send you some more history.

He may have been related to the family of George and Annie Machin who moved to Dewsbury from the Hanley area, they had six sons all over six feet tall and one daughter. Three of the sons died in the war.

If you can send me your e-mail address I can put you in touch with the family.

The death of Thomas Machin was registered in the June Quarter of 1921 in Volume 6b, Page 160, Stoke registration district.

If you visit www.gro.gov.uk, you will be able to order a copy of the death certificate which will help you in your reseach. These can be mailed to overseas addresses.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know if you know this but Pte Thomas Machin was buried in what is called a Class 1 PLOT where I believe 3 people are buried within it. 265971 Pte T Machin R.F.A., 6/121780 Coporal A Pinkett of the Notts and Derby Regiments and Levi Machin Aug 23rd 1926 aged 63.

Got the photos of the plot, individual graves of the 2 soldiers and Levi just has no headstone just a memorial urn.

What a fantastic response for this new Australian member, especially if it turns out to be the correct ancestry. This sums up the power of the forum for me, well done to all envolved!

Thankyou to everyone who has been able to help.

This is definitely my great uncle, his father Levi (my great grandfather - I thought he had died in 1919, so that clears up another mystery!) and his stepbrother Arthur, born in 1900.

I will now be able to follow up with death certificates knowing that I have the right people. :)

What a great site - the response has been terrific.

Thankyou for all the photos. Did you by any chance notice who was commemorated on the other urn?

It is interesting to note that both men, who would have been living in the same house, died within a month of each other! I will get the death certificates as there may be a connection.

I will head off to the National Archives site in search of more information.
