Guest KevinEndon Posted 4 July , 2006 Share Posted 4 July , 2006 I thought L/Cpl was an appointment and not a rank that's why medals say Pte then Cpl and miss out L/Cpl, however I have found a M I C with L/Cpl on it as rank. Please inform Kevin
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 4 July , 2006 Share Posted 4 July , 2006 You will find L.Cpl on Medals too, It is an appointment, rather than a rank, & as well as appearing on MiC I also is impressed on Medals,I have examples on BWM,Victory,1914 & 1914~15 Star as well as MMs MSMs & DCM. auchonvillerssomme Posted 4 July , 2006 Share Posted 4 July , 2006 Until 1961, Lance-Corporal was only an appointment rather than a rank, given to privates who were acting NCOs, and could be taken away by the soldier's commanding officer (whereas a full Corporal could only be demoted by court martial). GavinH Posted 4 July , 2006 Share Posted 4 July , 2006 I've seen it on Gallantry Awards, and also on British War and Victory Medals awarded to South Africans, but I've never seen L/Cpl. on a BWM or Victory Medal awarded to the British Army.
