Remembered Today:

India

I am curious about the regular battalions that remained in India throughout the war. Did these units supply drafts of men to other battalions (i.e. in theatres of war) or was it considered more important to keep a good number of professional soldiers in India?

I think in the early stage of the war there weren't enough to leave India 'unguarded' - remember there had been fighting on the NWF in 1908. A further uprising took place in 1915, and the regular battalions that remained were kept here for the rest of the war.

I don't think they sent many personnel to F/F - certainly this wasn't the case with 1st Royal Sussex, whose officers didn't even seek appointments outside of India!
