I had started transcribing the diaries, then got caught up in something else and had totally forgot about the look-ups, sorry.

I'll have a look through the diaries tonight.

Barrie,

What does the Diary say for the 6th November, 1914?

Nothing that exciting, got in another war diary and officers papers from the NA, afraid they have been my priority of late. I'll be back with replies soon.

Ok, apologies for the late reply. I've had a quick look for all the names given, and can't see any - it is quite hard to read though, and I was rushing, but I didn't see mention of many soldiers other than officers. Sorry Pettsy, no mention of L/Cpl Munn, only NCOs I saw mentioned were a couple of Pipers.

John, no mention of your guys either, but here is what happened on 13/10/15, one of the days you were enquiring about. I'm afraid the diary for October and first few days of November doesn't seem to exist, they have some officers recollections instead. If these are of interest let me know and I'm send you them.

"13/10/15

West of Hulluch

5am to 1 pm - Wire Cutting and prelimanry bombardment by our own artillery - 3 Brigades RFA firing HE at 4750

1pm - Gas Discharged

For full details of attack see Apendix A attached.

All three officers of C Coy killed, all three of B Coy wounded

The fighting strength of the battalion was 14 officers 536 other ranks.

The total breadth of the objective was 500 yards.

The casualties were; Officers Killed - 2nd Lts: Paton, Fraser, Ballantyne, Hutchison and Hayes (missing presumed dead)

Officers Wounded - Lieut Merrylees, 2nd Lt Hume, Mercer, Lamb, and Young

OR Killed - ?

OR Wounded - 163

Total Casualties - Officers 10 OR - 229

Wind SSW - weather very fine"

Derek, this is what it says for the 6th of November 1914:

"November 6th Ypres - Heavy shelling from 8am until dark. Casualties killed - rank and file one. Wounded (afterwards died) rank and file one.

Weather very foggy early and in evening."

Not much, hopefully ties in with what you were looking for.

Sorry again for the delays guys, really need to get these transcribed

Hi Barrie

Do you have anything on 2ndLt William Ballantyne who was killed in action at Hulaach on 13.10.1915? Any info for that day would be much appreciated. :D

Thanks

Hi Evelyn,

2/Lt Ballantyne was only with the Battalion a matter of weeks before he was killed in action.

On the 25th of September 1915 he joined the Battalion from Cadet School, St Omer, only to be killed on the 13th of October in an attack just west of Hulluch. Total casualties for the day were; officers 10, other ranks 229.

There is an appendix detailing the attack, let me know if you want a copy.

Barrie

Would you mind looking up the 23rd October 1914 in your diary. I would like to know what happened that day, as one of the casualties was a family member Sgt Alexander McGuire of 1st Btn Black Watch. I know that this would be the 1st Battle of Ypres, and some times the diary was not kept up to date due to heavy losses so I am not sure if there is any information there.

Thank you for your help.

Bernadette
