Tony Lund Posted 3 July , 2006 Share Posted 3 July , 2006 I came across this while I was looking for something else. A Chief Petty Officer in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Tony. MIC Wild guess:- Anti aircraft gunner attached to a Northumberland Fusiliers home defence unit???
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 3 July , 2006 Share Posted 3 July , 2006 Or a transcription error by the digitisation team. The naval AA unit was staffed by Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Neil Clark Posted 3 July , 2006 Share Posted 3 July , 2006 Now that does sound odd but then again maybe someone can confirm... Maybe the records refer to a previous rank in the Navy? Neil

per ardua per mare per terram Posted 10 July , 2006 Share Posted 10 July , 2006 On the Medal Index Card the 1st unit is shown as 'NF' the person I spoke to at The National Archives (William Spencer) confirmed that this stood for Naval Forces, not North'd Fus. The second line reads 19 Cps R.A. He was issued emblems (for Mention In Dispatches) 3/10/21. (I haven't spotted a MIC for that, but that index is known to be incomplete). As with all members of the RNVR there are records for him at Kew. His Anti Aircraft Corps service register shows that he entered as an Able Seaman in March, but rose to be CPO in July! He then transferred to the RGA for commissioning. He entered France on21/3/17.
