bevdavey Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 Can anybody help - I'm new at this. Lance Corporal Edward Henry Dobson, aged 20, 9487, 1st bn. Linconlnshire Regiment died on 9th Novemebr 1914 and is commemorated on panel 21 of the Menin Gate memorial. I would be very interested to know the circumstances of his death, and if there is a grave.
DaveBrigg Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 Welcome from another Lincs member. In answer to your questions, the 1st Lincs were one of the first battalions to arrive in Belgium at the start of the war, and saw a lot of action in 1914. There are more details if you follow the 'Long long trail' at the top of this page. Select 'regiments' and scroll down to 'Lincolnshire' and you'll be taken here http://www.1914-1918.net/lincolns.htm There are links to follow which will take you to a description of Mons, through to the 1st Battle of Ypres, where it is likely that Edward died. There are others on this forum with much greater knowledge of the 1st Lincs, who will be able to fill in the details. As for your second question, the Menin Gate lists only those who have no known grave. It is possible that he was buried, but the grave was later lost, or that his body was never identified. Our school are going to Ypres at the end of September, and if you haven't got a picture of the inscription by then, I'll try to find it for you. Good luck with the research.
