Ilbury Welsh Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 I saw several times today the image of a soldier in a trench with his comrade on his shoulders. This is a photograph and piece of film regularly seen and always lives with me. Has it ever been known who this soldier was? John.
elliot#1 Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 The program on Channel 5 today tried to identify him but it wasn't possible as they tried to indentify him as a person it was belived to be but he wasn't serving in France at the time. Landsturm Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 I'm sure you refre to still photo of Malins film in Somme 1916. This has been discussed in the forum several times, just keep searching. I believe the rescuer has been identified as RSM George Wood of the 21st Pioneer Bn of West Yorkshire Regiment. The wounded man died of his wounds. Guest KevinEndon Posted 1 July , 2006 Share Posted 1 July , 2006 I hope George had a long and fruitful life after his heroics in the trench. His face in the footage shows the horors of war. Maybe one of his family are on here or a relative of the person he tried to save and have been too humbled to say.
Ivor Posted 2 July , 2006 Share Posted 2 July , 2006 I believe the rescuer has been identified as RSM George Wood of the 21st Pioneer Bn of West Yorkshire Regiment. The wounded man died of his wounds. RSM George Wood has been discounted by the Millatary Museum according to yesterday's programme and they said that they would not put another name to the soldier until they had confirmation from an independant source as to who it is. It was also stated that there are about 50 other names that have been put forward as to who this soldier is.
