Thousands gather to remember the Somme

14:07pm 30th June 2006

"Thousands of British people began gathering on the battlefields of the Somme today to honour the 20,000 who fell in the bloodiest day in the history of the British army.

The Prince of Wales, Princess Anne and cabinet ministers will be among those taking part in a day of commemorations tomorrow exactly 90 years after the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916."

The 'Unseen' pictures were interesting, especially that taken in a trench with infantry leaping overhead. Less inpressive was this caption below a shot of a tank

'The Battle of the Somme saw the world debut of tanks - nicknamed Big Willes by troops - in warfare. But they were only of limited use: by 1918 only 36 of the 49 tanks made available to support the infantry had reached their starting points.

There's almost as much coverage in the Daily Mail of the Somme as there is of the partners of England footballers partying and shopping...
