Hedley Malloch Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 It's clear from all the restrictions on movement and the closure of cafés that some VIPs will be attending. A colleague who scours the French press says that Charles and Camilla will be attending the Somme commemorations, presumably at Thiepval. Has this been reported here or elsewhere? I have searched the Forum for the last 60 days, but can't find a mention.

ianw Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 Yes, Hedley. Chuck going has been known about for some time. I presume that the security zone is designed to cover the route the royals will take around the attractions - no parking being allowed to avoid any possibility of car bombs. Tony Lund Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 Will he be taking his horse? During a 1915 visit to the Western Front the King inspected representatives of the 49th West Riding Division at Abeele, and complimented them on their smartness, before moving on to an airfield at Hesdyneal. When the men of the Royal Flying Corps spotted the King arriving they gave a loud spontaneous cheer which took his horse completely by surprise. The horse reared up and slipped backwards, the King fell off and the horse landed on top of him. He returned home onboard a hospital ship and was carried into Buckingham Palace on a stretcher. Tony. PhilB Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 I believe Haig was temporarily under a cloud as he was ultimately responsible for providing a bombproof horse for KGV to ride. I would imagine the blame finished up ultimately with some cavalry major who`d actually selected the mount! Phil B

PhilB Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 Could well be! I never really went for that "The Buck Stops Here" thing. When did an Official Inquiry ever blame the man at the top? Phil B

T8HANTS Posted 18 June , 2006 Share Posted 18 June , 2006 That would make KGV the last British King to fall on the field of battle, unless KGVI fell over somewhere. Gareth

ianw Posted 19 June , 2006 Share Posted 19 June , 2006 And the Princess Royal will be there as well. If any more Royals turn up they will rebuild Thiepval in a French military camp and be done with it !
