Sgt_Hazell_Great_Grandson Posted 17 June , 2006 Share Posted 17 June , 2006 Pals , any info on the following chap would be most helpful. Lt. Albert Dudley Eric Rippon, Royal Fusiliers. Born :29.4.92 Died :16.4.63 , Fairmile hospital. That is all i have about his military service i`m afraid. He was also a good county cricketer. Kind regards, Roland. ajsmith Posted 17 June , 2006 Share Posted 17 June , 2006 His obituary from the 1964 edition of Wisden Cricketers Almanack reads RIPPON,Albert Dudley Eric who died on April 16 1963, aged 70, opened the innings with his twin brother A.E.S. Rippon for Somerset between 1914-1920. A patient amateur batsman, he scored 1043 runs average 20.05. In making the first of his two centuries he carried his bat for 105 against Sussex at Bath in 1914 though lame and having to employ a runner. When hitting 134 from the Essex bowling in 1919 he shared with his brother a partnership of 144. Troubled by the effects of a wound received in the First World War, he played only one innings in 1920 and never appeared afterwards. He was born on the 29th April 1892 in Kensington. His brother Arthur Ernest Sydney Rippon, who continued to play first-class cricket until 1937, died in Kingston, Surrey on the 13th April 1966. Both boys attended King's College,Taunton. Not much of military content I know, but hope it's of some use.

J T Gray Posted 17 June , 2006 Share Posted 17 June , 2006 Can't help with his WW1 service, Roland. Just querying whether as someone relatively local you are familiar with Fairmile - assuming it's the one at Cholsey? Adrian
Steven Broomfield Posted 17 June , 2006 Share Posted 17 June , 2006 There's a Fairmile near Exeter, which is where I always assumed (possibly wrongly) that the Fairmile Boats of WW2 came from.

Stebie9173 Posted 19 June , 2006 Share Posted 19 June , 2006 The Times of 17-4-1963 carries a short Personal Ad Death announcement. RIPPON - On 16 April 1963, at Wallingford, Berks, ALBERT DUDLEY ERIC RIPPON, husband of Agnes Mary and father of Murray and Anthony. There is also an obituary in the same issue but adds nothing to the Wisden obituary, only mentioning that he was badly wounded in WW1. Steve.
