DMcNay Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 I'm off to a wedding in Gretna tomorrow. I thought I'd try and add to my collection of War Memorial photos while I'm there. Is there anything else I should look out for? I know there's a memorial to the rail disaster, is that near the centre of town? David
ypres1418 Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 If I recall correctly it is not too far, but it was 16yrs ago when i was there for the unveiling and pregnant so it might be further than i recall. Not much help there was I? LOL Mandy
DMcNay Posted 15 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2006 Maybe not, but you were so friendly with your answer so that makes up for it. David
michaeldr Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 (edited) re the memorial to the rail disaster I was at Gretna in November last and it is in the car park behind the smithy/shop/tourist centre It's quite a small cairn actually and you have to look carefully especially if the car park is full. Being in Novemenber, my father was able to replace the poppy on a wee wooden cross left there by someone earlier The shop should also have copies of Gordon L. Routledge's book 'The Sorrows of Quintinshill' and if not there then try the nearby 'Gretna shopping village' [or whatever its called] where I got mine at the tourist office Have a good day Michael D.R. DMcNay Posted 15 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2006 Thanks for the tip about the book, I'll look out for that. Not sure how much time I'll have, but we're aiming to get there for lunch so I might have an hour or two to go for a wander.

Steven Broomfield Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 Isn't it odd that no-one has commented on the fact that a trip to a wedding acts as a natural lead-on to photographing war memorials? For me, the most natural thing in the world, but I have met non-Forumites who look askance. (That would be Mrs Broomfield, of course )
Guest KevinEndon Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 The war memorial is on the main road between Gretna and Gretna Green, parking by the memorial is a pain in the rear. If you park in the main car park at the back of the main tourist bit in Gretna Green it is well within walking distance taking less than 5 mins. Head down the main road to Gretna and the memorial is on the main junction with the main Dumfries road. Like I say parking near to is a pain, there is a hotel on the left heading into G. .G. you could brave face it and park on there. What you do have to look out for is English fans with their faces tripping them after their defeat this afternoon lol. Happy snapping in Gretna
DMcNay Posted 16 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 16 June , 2006 Thanks to everyone for your replies. I found the Rail Disaster cairn fairly easily, and also the main war memorial for the town. I also photographed a memorial to the people ofGretna killed in an air raid in 1941, but I guess that's off-topic for here. Sad to say, it seems that "The Sorrows of Quintinshill" is now out of print. The Smithy/Blacksmith shop place didn't have it, and the Tourist Office on ly had their display copy. They told me they weren't getting any more in. Shame, that. It looked a good wee book. Now I'm off to bed. I'm shattered...
