Tony Lund Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 I am seeking the place of birth, enlistment and residence if given and whether listed as kia or dow, and any supplementary information please on this man: Joseph Ernest Turner, Corporal 43023 11th Bn. Leicestershire Regiment Date of Death: 22/03/1918 I have just come across a report of a man named Joe Turner being killed in early 1918. I am told he moved from Holmfirth to Kirkheaton near Huddersfield before the war, and that he worked at Milnsbridge. This is the only man whose date of death is in the right period. Many thanks, Tony.

Tony Lund Posted 14 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 14 June , 2006 Thank you, that does not look very much like a Yorkshireman. I think I had better dig a bit deeper. Tony.
Andrew Hesketh Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 Formerly 21159 Sherwood Forresters. This would indicate enlistment in December 1914 (more than likely on New Years Eve), and probably to the 9th battalion. A lot of the men in this number sequence were 9th initially and then moved on to other battalions or regiments.
ian turner Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 Tony, CWGC seems to have quite a few 'J' Turners listed during the first few months of 1918, including several Josephs. Ian
Tony Lund Posted 7 July , 2006 Author Share Posted 7 July , 2006 Joe Turner was reported killed in action on March 22nd. I have just found out that at the end of April Mrs Turner was delighted to receive a postcard from her husband dated March 23rd. He said he was a prisoner but otherwise “Sound.” Tony.
