cartershome Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 Hi i wonder if someone could help me or point me in the right direction to get help i am trying to help a friend who lives in the usa to trace her english roots . she knows her great grandparents were ANNIE SCULLY ( MAIDEN NAME RICHARDS ) BORN C1891 IN SUSSEX and ARTHUR SCULLY born c1897 not sure where. ANNIE became a domestic servant in a big house in HOVE SUSSEX and ARTHUR was in some type of calvalry unit stationed in PORTSLADE SUSSEX and he used to visit her on his horse and talk to her over the back wall - so thats how they met. their first child was born c 1920 would anyone have any idea what regiment that might be and how i can find out about him many thanks love linda x
Paul Nixon Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 Couldn't see any Yeomanry / Cavalry units for Arthur Scully or A Scully on the National Archives' medal card index. That doesn't mean an awful lot. He could have been with a mounted unit but just not served overseas. Anyway, here is the NA link for Arthur Scully and here's the link for A Scully. If your friend has a photo of him in uniform see if you can post it here. That might provide some clues.

Paul Nixon Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 No idea I'm afraid. There were probably many battalions that passed through or were in the area. As he was based in Sussex I checked the name Scully against Sussex Yeomanry as a wild stab in the dark but I'm afraid that returned zero results. Sorry. From the information you've supplied so far, ie the fact that he was mounted, you can rule out the infantry battalions in the links I sent you. That leaves two possible artillerymen with the Royal Field Artillery. It's possible I suppose, that he was one of these two men. Paul
gregs_yorkley Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 Looking at the 1901 census, the most likely entry for Arthur Scully is in St Pancras, son of Thomas Scully (borner Sunderland Durham) and Elizabeth (born Sheerness Essex). There are only 3 born at about this time, the others are 1900 Plaistow and 1895 Bristol. The address is shown as 5 Crescent Place, St Pancras, and Arthur is aged 4 so born approx 1897. Don't know if this info will help track down his records, but it might just be the bit you need. Cheers Angela
ororkep Posted 15 June , 2006 Share Posted 15 June , 2006 Ancestry only throws up one suitable entry for an Annie Richards (1892) from a farming community in Warnham Sussex, plenty of other siblings that could potentially be traced that might have other info re marriage and a Wilshire connection. If uou need the actual sheet PM me. Paul
