eltoro1960 Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 I have seen an archive local newspaper report which stated that members of the Durham Light Infantry were stationed and trained in the Lothian Hall, Newtongrange,Midlothian. Can any of the DLI experts out there shed any light please, thanks.

Graham Stewart Posted 14 June , 2006 Share Posted 14 June , 2006 John, Are we looking at WWI or WWII here? As according to "British Regiments 1914-1918", the only D.L.I. Battalion to be located in Scotland during WWI was the 2nd Bn, who were in Dunfermline as part of 18th Brigade/6th Division from 8th to 13th August 1914. During WWII I believe it was a different matter and that some Durham Battalions were sent to Scotland after Dunkirk for a long spell of R&R, before recommencing training. I'm afraid though I don't know which battalions they were and it's based purely on memory of a conversation many years ago. Graham.

Graham definitely WW1, I was researching the Dalkeith Advertiser and it said that the DLI was training and billeted at the Lothian Hall, (Main Street Newtongrange) and the Silver Band Hall. Apparently the DLI band (doesn't state which) played a concert with Newtongrange Silver Band, I guess I will have to do some more delving at the Local History Library.
