Muerrisch Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Medal experts, please: simple question: How does one recognise a DCM and Bar, compared with a DCM. And what is the difference when only ribbons are worn: a silver rosette for each bar perhaps?
simon2 Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Grumpy, DCM and bar has a silver, laurelled bar across the ribbon for all subsequent awards. Before 1916 this would have been just a date on the bar. I suppose similar to the QSA's bars.
Muerrisch Posted 13 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2006 attached to the medal itself, please?
simon2 Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Attached to the medal across the ribbon similar to the 1914 star and clasp. The ribbon bar I'm not sure if a rosette is added I'm sure othermembers would know.
Muerrisch Posted 13 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2006 now I am worried: the 14 star clasp is stitched in place [as issue] on to ribbon: are we saying the same for DCM ..... so it could be lost?
PhilB Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Here`s a picture of a repro bar. Phil B
eviltaxman Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Here's a pic of the DCM with bar. Notice the bar is a little way up the ribbon, but appears to have come away from the main suspender bar. I believe it was attached to the suspender like the QSA/KSA....... Les
simon2 Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 A picture of one belonging to an Australian soldier. Capt. W.J.Rowlinson. This is a DCM and Bar earned during the Korean war but I don't think much changed in anything.
Muerrisch Posted 13 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2006 many thanks to all: detached or detachable, certainly. So where does one get a replacement for a lost bar?
eviltaxman Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 Grumps, try Dixons Medals. Their website is finally back up & running. Give 'em a ring or an e-mail. They managed to supply me with very good copies of some hard to get clasps for a QSA the other week. Dixons Les
Steven Broomfield Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 And coming back to the first question - a rosette on the ribbon indicating a bar, I think is the answer for when ribbons only are worn.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 13 June , 2006 Share Posted 13 June , 2006 DCM: The Laurel "Bar" was loose & mounted on the ribbon{it was a tight slide over fit~& often the ribbon was stiched above & below it to keep in place,it has tiny loop holes @ each end,top & bottom,up to 1917 Dated Bars were awarded these were mounted a la Campaign Medal Clasp;ie:directly to the suspension bar rod by large loops} The Rose denoting a Bar was worn on the Ribbon Bar only & one would have been worn on the ribbon for each bar awarded{not that there were that many multiple bars~9 2nd Bars only;with 472 1st Bars} The maximum number of Bars awarded to other WW1 awards are as follows:~ DSM 2 MC 3 DSC 2 DSO 3 CGM 1 MM 3 thus the winners of the three DSO & three MC & MM would wear three Roses on their Ribbon bar for that medal{they just fit} A genuine replacement Laurel Bar will be an expensive commodity,as the Bar is universal to DCM,MM,DSM,CGM,MSM & as such is highly sought after,on occasion Liverpool Medals have had them,as have other dealers but the real McCoy end to be a bit like Hen's teeth,a copy/replica will probably be the easier option. you could be cheeky & try the AMO
