S.S. BALMORAL CASTLE

The 10th Royal Hussars were stationed at Potchefstroom, South Africa, when the Regiment was recalled to the U.K. in August 1914. My grandfather, H6285 Pte. Frederick Richards, 'B' Squadron, 10th Royal Hussars, was with them when they sailed from Cape Town 28th August 1914 on the S.S. BALMORAL CASTLE. The ship docked at Southampton 19th September 1914.

Does anyone have any other details on the S.S. BALMORAL CASTLE ?

A picture would be terrific.

I must be honest and say that I don't know of a ship called Northbrook from this period. There was one about 50 years before - an immigrant ship running between London and Sydney. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Northbrook was an official Royal Indian Marine troopship not a commandeered vessel.

Northbrook, launched 1907, 5820 tons, 16.5 knots, built by John Brown on the Clyde, armed by 6 x 4.7 inch, 6 x 3 pdrs, she was listed until 1924.

Served East Indies only.
