Dan,

I would suggest that is not the charge but the reference to the covering letter that went with the Warrant. If he was discharged thats where the information would be in that letter. What other information have you got, it should say why he was discharged? Is the top right hand corner still on his service documents?

Dan,

Any chance of scanning and posting the entry, generally a term of imprisonment was accompanied by discharge from the service.

Will try and scan teh doc and perhpas you will be able to read better than i, you are correct he was DISCHARGED but some how he joined up again in the army Royal Highlanders . He has two groups of medals Trio and pair its def not father and son it is him for sure have some research with it. States File NL2-9243/16 did not survive he was discharged in 1916 with IGNOMINY . The records for his service with the RH WO/363-273 and mis-sorts or WO/364-1252 & 5199 WW1 PIN (Ministry of Pensions) again i take it destroyed or burned or lost .

Dan,

Discharged with Ignominy was generally for Royal Marines unless specifically apllied for, for a naval rate. If this was granted at Admiralty level the top right hand corner would be cut off.

Does it say in the discharge column CM?. Look forward to the scan.

Dan,

Seems he was discharged SNLR (Services No Longer Required) He hasnt previously been in trouble so the reason for the 9 months Imprisonment would be quite bad at a guess under age maybe, does it say anywhere Not fit for further service, or Reduced to the Second Class for conduct. The writing in on the top right corner is the approval for his discharge on completion of his prison sentence.

Hope this helps, have you tried Courts Martial records?

Hi Charels

No I have not yet tried court martial records where do I find them at KEW NA ?. Discharged because he was UNDERAGED ? from what i have read because of the shortage of manpower in the armed forces at the start of the war, they took knowingly underaged volunters into the armed forces. Many thanks for the help you have given me .

Dan,

Have a look at this thread, you never know? The records are kept at Kew. Reasons I say "underage"..... he wasnt given hard labour which would probably have accompanied a Dishonesty, Disobedience or Violent crime. He was discharged SNLR so Disgraceful or Scandalous conduct not involved. So to get 9 months imprisonment as a first offence cuts the options down. But as I said as a guess!. Lets hope you find the records.
