douglass Posted 5 June , 2006 Share Posted 5 June , 2006 My great uncle was killed 29/10/16 at the Somme whilst with the 5th Scottish Rifles, I believe they were attacking BORITSTKA TRENCH apparently this is neat Lesbeofs and hazy trench. He is mentioned on the Thiepval Memorial but i was hust wondering if he was buried at all? could he be in an unmarked grave in the nearest cemetery? just a thought any help appreciated douglass
Terry Denham Posted 5 June , 2006 Share Posted 5 June , 2006 He could be in an 'Unknown Soldier' grave in any one of many cemeteries and not necessarily the nearest one. Bodies were moved a long way in the post-war cemetery concentrations. It is also equally possible that he is still out there somewhere or that his body did not survive the trauma that killed him. Through a cross-check with SDGW and CWGC you could perhaps identify where any other casualties of the 5th Scottish Rifles killed in that attack are buried. You may well find that there are unknown Scottish Rifles buried there too, and, although it would not identify the grave of your Great Uncle, it would perhaps partly satisfy your understandable curiosity. Best wishes. Andy.
auchonvillerssomme Posted 5 June , 2006 Share Posted 5 June , 2006 Have a look in GUARDS' CEMETERY, LESBOEUFS. I beleive theres a few in there. I agree he could be anywhere or nowhere In the words of Robert Service 'Part of him mud, part of him blood, The rest of him -- not at all'.
