Matt Dixon Posted 7 October , 2003 Share Posted 7 October , 2003 Can anyone tell me when the South Africans served in the Vimy sector, and why there is specifically a memorial to their artillery? Having read many books on the Vimy front I have yet to find mention of them.
Paul Reed Posted 8 October , 2003 Share Posted 8 October , 2003 Which memorial are you talking about? The one at the crossroads in Thelus? If so, that commemorates ALL of the artillery units which took part in the Vimy assault, including the South African Heavy Artillery, which was a Corps/Army heavy battery from memory. Paul Reed Posted 8 October , 2003 Share Posted 8 October , 2003 Hi Matt, As promised in the email, this is the c.1920 postcard of the memorial; you will see it commemorates all the artillery units on loan to the CC in this battle, as well as the Canadian ones.
