Guest lesley Posted 5 October , 2003 Share Posted 5 October , 2003 Does anybody have any infomation on the memorial to the Great War currently being constructed at Brookwood Military Cemetery? There are just under 200 men commemorated there. What is the criteria for inclusion on the memorial?
Bob Coulson Posted 5 October , 2003 Share Posted 5 October , 2003 Lesley, I think Terry Denham has referred to this in earlier posts, no doubt he will be able to provide details. Bob.
BRIAN TALMER Posted 5 October , 2003 Share Posted 5 October , 2003 Thanks Bob Before posting I did try a search but it came up with no matches. I await Terry's input with anticipation Lesley
Terry Denham Posted 5 October , 2003 Share Posted 5 October , 2003 Lesley The memorial to which you refer is The Brookwood 1914-1918 Memorial which will bear 178 names - 132 British and 46 Canadian. The names are those of all casualties who died in the UK but whose graves have never been located or whose bodies were never recovered. The search for the graves of the majority has proved fruitless over the years and this memorial is being built to give these men their proper recognition. The memorial is due for completion before the end of the year but their names are already listed in the Debt of Honour if you enter the memorial name as above in the cemetery search option. The memorial is located within Brookwood Military Cemetery, near Woking, Surrey. This cemetery also includes two other memorials - the Brookwood Memorial bearing names of casualties with no known grave who died in Europe during WW2 not elsewhere commemorated and the Brookwood (Russia) Memorial listing all those who died in Russia during both world wars. The graves of these casualties had been deemed unmaintainable in the 1920s and during the Soviet era and so were inscribed here. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, CWGC has returned to Russia and most are now commemorated again in that country making this memorial almost defunct.
